Shop closures

Post by Tigger rules » 11 Jan 2006, 18:27

 It astonishes me having visited this site several times how people think it is time well spent getting involved in rumour and hearsay.

Take the most recent subject of certain shops closing etc. Did anyone think of the effect that might have on those businesses staff and trading? These are real people and a valuable part of our community. People respond to negative issues and rumour, the stock market proves this. False rumours build into all sorts of problems for those involved and once started are hard to kill off. They can be as damaging, if not more so, as truth about negative issues.

I must also add at this point that the role of an administrator is to police this valuable resource, not be the instigator of conjecture and rumour. Sorry Bob, but that is an abuse of your position. Who monitors your comments?

Porty and its community faught a great battle against the superstore, so why does there seem to be a move toward "hey, lets have a go at...." Really folks, grow up! I for one do almost all my shopping locally and would not want to see these businesses suffer any more. They have had enough to put up with, now they need our loyal support, as the majority of us already do. So lets see some positive comments on our high street, instead of busying ourselves with who was married to who! Unless of course all the contributors are under 13, in which case I can understand.

Welcome Tigger and I hope you enjoy POL. I do feel you are being a bit harsh on Bob with the following statement:
Tigger rules wrote: I must also add at this point that the role of an administrator is to police this valuable resource, not be the instigator of conjecture and rumour. Sorry Bob, but that is an abuse of your position. Who monitors your comments?
Firstly, Bob's comments are monitored by the other three moderators.

Secondly, here is how Bob opened the thread and I think he got the tone and content bang on.
Bob Jefferson wrote:Eleanor Robertson, whose husband is the former owner of the Blue Bean Café, is having a closing down sale at her ladies clothing shop at the top of Bellfield Street. It's disappointing to be losing a quality shop and hopefully we will get something of value to replace it.
Thirdly, I cannot think of anyone more positive about Portobello than Bob is.

Porty beat me to it with his reply, Tigger, which pretty much sums up what I was about to post.
. So lets see some positive comments on our high street, instead of busying ourselves with who was married to who! Unless of course all the contributors are under 13, in which case I can understand.
I would also like to add that when a local business is deserving of praise, Tigger, then you will find that POLers are not slow in posting their praise and recommendations. I ought to add here that if you are a regular visitor to this forum then you ought to be familiar with some of the more jocular of our posters. Malice is not tolerated I assure you, but as James Thurber said "Humour is a serious thing. I like to think of it as one of our greatest earliest natural resources, which must be preserved at all cost."

Well, then I must go with and accept the majority thought. I have not been a participator until now, just an observer.

I still feel very strongly, and I hope that as a community member my feelings have a right to be aired as any. My comments about Bob I feel were justified in that I would look to him and other administrators to keep the nasty stuff out. On this occasion if his comment was jocular, then sorry, maybe my sense of humour is that dry.

I stand by what I say. Support the shops, don't start rumours that could affect them negatively

Welcome Tigger. Lest anyone should misconstrue anything I have posted in this thread thus far, I would like to publicly state that my wife was, in fact, never married to Epykat's cousin. This was a joke between consenting adults. Nevertheless, I would like to apologise for any embarassment or confusion this may have caused.

Other than that, I think I have stuck pretty much to the facts.

Tigger, I think you have broken a POL record with an apology in just your second post. Fantastic!! :D It took Dada about 3000.

I have re-read the entire thread and your views as a newbie are important , what comments do you feel equate to "nasty stuff"?

Hi Bob and all
This is all new to me, even chat rooms in general, so my first posting does seem to witter on a bit compared to others.

I see the sense of humour now coming across, having viewed other postings in other subjects. Some can be quite, well, enough said.

I look forward to more news and hopefully fuller views in the near future, backed up of course by thoroughly researched FACTS.

Welcome to the board, Tigger rules. Don't worry - I'm right here to keep Bob under control. Him and a few others.

For the record, I agree that it's a real shame ER is closing down, but I wish her and her family all the best for the future.

My son has just read this thread. Bemused by the allegations (all completely untrue of course) of relationships between various Porty traders, he asked: "What is this? Desperate Shopkeepers?"

For the record, he is under 13, so I guess that let's him off the hook.

It could have been worse. You could have claimed that your cousin was married to Epykat's wife

And hello to Tigger Rules! It's nice to get new people involved and I sincerely hope you continue to post and not just lurk. However, like other contributors to this thread I would like to defend Bob, his comments and those of the others. The majority of posters on this forum fully supported PCATs and their efforts in every way possible. We also support local businesses (some of which, you will gather, I have a family interest in!) as much as we possibly can and it was a bit unfair of you to accuse us otherwise. Some people have only repeated news which they have heard which possibly affects us. For the record I've also heard that Kitchener's is changing hands - I didn't start that 'rumour' but do you know if it's true?
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

I noticed that Graham Kitchener has become a member today so perhaps he can tell us the truth behind these stories ........from the horses mouth, can't do better than that.

Thank you for the welcome.

I do feel that maybe my personal viewpoints are a little bit too controversial and I do not conform to the majority viewpoint. Funny, but I thought that was the freedom of speech. Maybe I'm just too old fashioned.

With that in mind I respect all your views and opinions as to my comments, but I feel this is not the website for me. I had hoped, and was led to believe, that I would find serious subjects with good debate, but what appears to happen is subjects go off at a bizarre tangent and what started as a perfectly good thread loses its sense of direction quickly. Maybe that's how chat forums work, I don't know. At my age I only got my first PC two years ago, so what would I know?!

So, in respect to you all, I wish you well and you will be relieved to know I will take no further part in this site. I have sent an email today to Mr Jefferson to find out how to remove my details.

It actually was fun, but its not what I thought it would be. Shame, what a potentially excellent resource for serious discusion.

I would usually ignore an outburst like this but the criticism of this forum and everyone who is involved in it has really annoyed me.

First I don't understand how someone who has apparently been following discussions for a while can then turn round and say s/he had been "led to believe" things and "it's not what I thought it would be".

Secondly I don't think TR was being particularly controversial (although I am sure that's how s/he would like to see him/herself so s/he can feel persecuted for having "radical" views). Has s/he not read some of the stuff that Dadaist and others have posted?

This forum is the online equivalent of a social gathering when you don't know many people. You find out who to listen to. Who to ignore. If someone butts in, you say "Excuse me I was trying to make a serious point"

Noone is going to be "relieved" that s/he's not wanting to stick around. At the same time don't expect us to be too bothered. The forum is for him/her cos s/he lives/works/is interested in Portobello. It's only as good as the people who contribute.

Right I'll stop cos each time I read TR's last post it makes me want to scream.

You've got the wrong end of the stick. Maybe I'm just too sensitive.

I'll say it again, sorry if I've called offence.

This is not what I thought it would be so I decided, for my own reasons, to leave.

Isn't that ok? This is not directed at anyone else other than my own mistake.

As for being frustrated at my every posting, well surely I too was allowed to say what I feel? Which was my point. My views are too prickly and fair enough. I take the hint. And no I'm n ot looking for "boohoo poor me.

This was NOT an attack at anyone else. If thats what came across, then, well, I'm sorry.

You may not be sad to see me go, but I am. I wish I'd never started. I read that personal attacks were not tolerated, but I have posted general comments, not personal attacks, just comments.

So, again, sorry for getting your back up. Can we leave at that?! I'll continue to log in and raed with interest what's happening in Porty, but (at risk of repeating myself) its not for me. That's my right, no?

There is a sale of bits and bobs at E R's tomorrow and Thursday between 10-12 (I think - it might have been 2 but was in hurry for my tea! Sorry)

Anyhoo, there is a selection of things like wooden coathangers, wineglasses, vases, pictures, lamps, office supplies etc. etc. All for a few quid each.
