Excellent! So you macusers don't have a problem with .wmv files? I've kind of given up on Flash. Windows Movie Maker is so much easier to use, it's free and it produces good results.

Took me a good 3 or 4 mins to download but it played well.
Nice editing, Bob.
I liked the way you cut to some photos of the cakestand being used by various performers.

Only an irrational but deep-seated reluctance to install the Microsoft WMV player ;)

Well, I'd do a Quicktime version, but the Pro version I would need costs money as well.

Thanks ecm - this is new territory for me, but I'm sure the 'production values' will improve with time.

But this isn't about me. This is supposed to be community TV! So where are your offerings?

I'm willing to offer a one hour crash-course in editing your camcorder footage using Windows Movie Maker if anyone is interested. If you have XP you will find that it comes bundled free.

Well done Bob.
Took about 3 secs to load on my mac and ran continuously.

The tented theatre that Archie Foley refers to was Andre Letta's Prom Pavilion, where he ran his pierrot shows during the 1920s and 30s (not to be confused with his Portobello Pavilion, which was a permanent theatre on the site in Bath Street where the George Bingo hall now stands.)
I have nothing to say and I'm going to say it.

By remarkable coincidence, the current copy of Computeractive magazine contains a guide to Windows Movie Maker, so now you have no excuse.

I still need more feedback on your experience of Portabelly Telly. I'm confused as to why it takes some people 3 seconds to begin watching our latest offering and others 3 minutes! What kind of connection do you have ecm?

I think that ten minute films are viable but I need to be persuaded. We have a possible tie-in with the Portobello High School Media Studies class if we can demonstrate that this works.

Ali and I share a broadband connection. It took him 3 seconds compared to my 3 minutes.

I love finding free software and today I discovered Photo Story 3, a free Windows download.

Get it here

It brings your still pictures to life by enabling you to add photo effects, zoom and pan movement, transition effects, text and sound.

Here's one I made earlier

I think it requires Windows Media Player 10. Problem is that every time you dl a new media player it tries to install itself as the default player for every media file type available. I seem to recall that at some point in the past I had two players, one being Real, both locked in an eternal battle to play mp3 files.

I think there is a codec issue with Mac and Photo Story. I have imported the file using Movie Maker and re-saved it. Can you see it now?

mac compatible?

There are lots of 3rd party Movie Maker add-ons offering extra effects and transitions. Because Photo Story is saved as a .wmv file it can be imported directly into MM and incorporated as part of a larger video. Should keep me amused for months!

Again, I have to stress that this stuff is dead easy to use. Give it a go!

Yes, that's the message I was getting.

Success! That looks really cool Bob. You'd swear that you were a really talented illustrator! Was there meant to be accompanying sound?

You should be getting Beethoven's 9th. I've now stripped the sound from the Photo Story file and re-added it via MM. Give it another go.

I just spotted this story in today's EN:

Porty focuses on local films
The first test videos have been launched on the radio's website, www.radiofreeporty.org.
Really? News to me and news to Matthew.

I don't know who wrote this article but I had no input. Jane Bradley contacted me a few weeks back and wanted to do a piece then, but I explained that we hadn't really got it off the ground yet. I'm still waiting for Paul to create the holding pages for one thing.

Of course I wanted the publicity so I promised to get back in touch with Jane when we were ready to launch.

So, no thanks to the Evening News on this occasion for a story that is half-cocked and factually incorrect.

Jane - give me a call next time, please? I'll pm you my home number in case you don't have it.

I have put up a link on the RFP main page to this discussion.

I wonder if the media chinese whispers stem from the fact that I put episode 1 of "Duckies" on RFP's server.

Next thing we'll read is that PBeebies is a real channel and that the BBC Intellectual Copyright lawyers are hounding me over stealing the name!!

Here's some of Elaine Ferguson's photography given the Photo Story treatment. I happen to know she's a fellow fan of Bolan, so I'm sure she'll approve of the music if not the treatment of her pics.

Elaine - I got a DVD copy of 'Born to Boogie' for Xmas. If you don't already have it I'm happy to lend it to you.

Reply from Jane Bradley re the Portabelly Telly article that appeared in the EN recently:
Hi Bob,

Sorry for the delay in replying - I'm just back to work today after the holidays.

I want to apologise for the story - I had bashed out a basic outline of the story weeks ago when I first heard about it and had left it on the system while I was away, saying you might get in touch so that one of my colleagues could add to it/change it after they had spoken to you - if you phoned while I was on holiday.

Looks like it was either printed in error or the message not to use it until you had OK-ed it didn't get passed on.

I'd be very happy to do another story putting the errors right. Just let me know when you'd like to do that.

Jane

It's all systems go for Portobelly Telly which will have its own section on the website very soon. The publicity machine is ready to roll with features in the Evening News and the Portobello Reporter planned.

Now we need some content. So where is it?

Here's an idea. I'm going to film a cookery series. What happens is that I turn up at your house and film you cooking your favourite dish. So who wants to be a TV chef? I need at least 5 volunteers. Post here or pm me.

I also want to do some filming on Porty High St next Saturday but I need at least one volunteer to help out - one hour max.
