I keep getting this message when I try to refresh the index page.

phpBB : Critical Error

Could not open subSilverHW template config file

DEBUG MODE

Line : 390
File : functions.php

Is it just me? What does it all mean? :? :? :?

That error should have been around for, oh, about 1 minute... Try pressing shift and reload (or is it ctrl-reload) at the same time.

Would it be fair to say that the service from these textdrive folks is a bit crap?

Surely a consistent reliable service would be better than having to be compensated with "a free months subscription" for a painfully slow constantly crashing service. Is this guy Dean yer mate, then??

No arguing with that, just trying to keep everyone informed

No. Is he a friend of yours?

it's just that I can't understand why we would continue with them when there must be dozens of other providers who are more reliable.

The trouble is, when its working its very good, the admin side is very flexible. We can move fairly easily if that decision is made, but so far we've decided to take the rough with the smooth for now.

that's fine but not much use to the rest of us when its playing up. I have 20 mins access during my tea break at work and it drives me mad to waste it waiting for POL to load.

We should take the free month but maybe you could assess the performance during that time and consider a move if things don't improve.
Any new visitors are not going to hang around the site or the forum when its slooooowwww or unavailable.

Ali, the current host offers many features that are not readily available elsewhere. To move to a bog standard host would require many hours of real boring work by xxxx in order to use a different database system... Several other features (shell access among them) make it much "nicer" for us guys behind the scenes, and indeed make possible the automatted nightly offsite backup I make of the forum database and the entire POL website.

It's a tradeoff really - move to a bog standard host and reliabilty is almost guaranteed to be 99.9%+ (compared to 96.9% for November and 90% so far in December) but what's in it for us guys - where's the motovation, where are the "special toys" that make it interesting enough for us to spend time doing this?

Honestly the current situation is really annoying me, and even more worse is the sickly sucking manner of the other guys on the textdrive forum ("geee, you guys are great") - that really *** me off...

And there you have it. The POL management team is as frustrated as everyone else with the lack of reliability with textdrive. We were on the verge of moving a few months back but decided to give it a stay of execution on the advice of Lee and Paul, who after all are the guys who would have to implement the move.

Hopefully, things will now start to improve. If not, then we will have to find a compromise that offers better reliability as well as the features that make it 'fun' for the techies. There is money available for this if required.

Paul and Lee are now actively considering alternative hosts so expect some news on this front soon. I think we all agree that the current level of service is unacceptable.

Apart from the inconvenience and frustration to users (and that includes me) we also have to maintain a reliable service to the businesses that have paid for entry in the directory. And it doesn't help to have so many outages when we are up for an award either!

I believe we're moving to a new server. Work is meant to be carried out this weekend on the site. (Well, that's what XXXX said yesterday before what I am assuming is the blistering hangover he has today  )
