A few comforting words from America's First Lady.
A few days ago the hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the coast around that city. Thousands of people were left to die, alone and with no help. The majority of these lives could have been saved. As Michael Parenti wrote "When an especially powerful hurricane hit that island [Cuba] last year, the Castro government, abetted by neighborhood citizen committees and local Communist party cadres, evacuated 1.3 million people, more than 10 percent of the country's population, with not a single life lost, a heartening feat that went largely unmentioned in the U.S. press."
But in New Orleans the majority of these people were poor and black. Does it make any difference? Of course it does, as Ms. Barbara Bush tells us: "And so many of the people in the arena here were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them. What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality."

I have read this statement over and over and I still cannot believe it!Gemini wrote:...as Ms. Barbara Bush tells us: "And so many of the people in the arena here were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them. Justice delayed is justice denied.
On a more serious note,I received this e-mail
from a contact in Pensylvannia.
Her aunt and cousin are caught up in the
disaster area.

this was my last 'group email', thought I would share it
with you. (9 days without a shower or shampoo for them, as of today)
Hello Everyone
Thank you so much for all your kind words and thoughtfulness. It is just
amazing what people have been offering to do and how they have responded
to my emails.
I have been in touch with Cindy on a daily basis. Things have changed a
little, some for the good, some for the bad. She is in her mothers house
with other people and 3 dogs. The house has damage, but it is better than
the street. They now have running dirty water, but it helps I'm sure. The
phone is working, but no cell phones. She calls me late at night so that
she can get through.
It is so hot they can only sleep 3 hours a night. She works for the City
Administrators Office of Slidell and is working 12 to 14 hours a day, 7
days a week. I'm not sure exactly where. She said she would give
anything for a shower and shampoo. They can only 'wipe off '.
The worst part now is the fear factor. The looters are everywhere. She is
afraid to move around by herself, in fact, they are forbidden to. The
'bad element' is armed, shooting and killing the police, fireman, and
Coast Guard. We received a news article today saying that they simply
released everyone in the jails when the storm hit. Cindy said they have
to burn candles at night and they add to the horrible heat, but they
want it known that there are people alive and armed in the house. She
said having the dogs there also helps. Nice way to live, isn't it? Fema
just came in yesterday with water and food. They refused to come in
because of the violence. It is been a long eight days for every one
there.......
We were able to wire some of the money to a friend of hers in another
town, she was going to get the cash and buy them water and food. She had
a hard time because Western Union dropped the ball, but that's another
story. I was fuming.......!! I thought Western Union would know what
they are doing......but NO. Cindys friend drove the money to her which
was a brave thing to do. I was concerned about Cindy having cash but she
said they have a safe, weapons, and the dogs.
We are working on getting help for the animals through humane societies,
that will be in my next email.
Keep praying....
The guy off the other forum I'm on with the cats has got his cats back - but his post was really interesting so I've pasted it here :
