Hi Spike,
I've e-mailed Bob to ask for advice with the pm problem and have also asked him to forward my message to you, if at all possible.
What a palaver, eh?

My apologies for the confusion. There is a known issue that is at the root of these problems. Before you log in, all the options to check your private messages, change your profile etc are available to you. When you select one of these options you are then prompted to log in and you are able to access the option you picked. However, if you log in first (or have your board set up to log you in automatically) then these options disappear. Most annoyingly this includes the option to log out, although you will be automatically logged out after a given time.

I hope this makes sense and we do hope to resolve this issue at some indeterminate point in the future.

Oo-er! I stand corrected - my spies tell me there are NO Valves in Joppa at all. Or anywhere near the beach for that matter. There may be one in spitting distance of Duddingston Loch though!

Onwards and upwards with the Great Valves Revival Campaign!!!!

I spent new year's eve in a pub in Kilchoan, on the Ardnamurchan peninsula. We were chatting to some people up from London. When I said I live in Portobello one said "Have you heard that song by the Valves?".

Just an excuse to bring this song to the attention of people who have joined in the last year or 2. Seems to be difficult to access some of the links though. The live recordings seem to work.

Between you and me Gedge, I'm all for having a splash page featuring a cartoon video for this song, which I've always considered to be our signature tune. But you know what these geek-types are like - purity of the code and all that.

Actually, now that I think about it, isn't that a fantastic idea? A Flash animation video for 'Ain't No Surf'. I think I feel a new project coming on.

OK, now I just need to find someone who is capable of doing this and then persuade them that it is a good idea to do it for nothing. Should be easy enough.

Was out tonight with a friend who was a punk in his youth and by chance he started talking about this track, and has it on CD and vinyl! Also mentioned what is for me the best band name I've ever heard - "Matt Vinyl and the Decorators!" :D

Thanks for the Porty local history site namecheck. I'm glad to see people are still finding it useful.

Different band, but if any of you see The Ronelles playing anywhere I highly recommend you go. Great Blues/Rock and Roll band from Glasgow.

Went to see them last Saturday at the Subway and my ears are still ringing

Many thanks to wangi, who alerted me to this clip recently. Currently trying to find some more info re the band and film. Audio quality is poor but good version of the Valves classic nevertheless and some great shots of Porty. Enjoy!

The lead singer is Richie Henderson. Others possibly include Alison MacFarlane and her brother, Colin MacFarlane. Recorded by BBC Scotland around 1990. Richie still seems to be involved in the local music scene and includes Rose Nimmo among his Facebook friends.
