What you listening to at the moment?
Took ecm's advice and started to search for my Bangra Greatest Hits CD, but got sidetracked when I found Eric Bibb "Painting Signs". He does a cracking version of Jimi Hendrix's "Angel" and the last track "Don't ever let nobody drag your spirit down" has him duetting with Wilson Pickett. Great stuff. He's now at the top of my CD collection again

I don't have any bhangra, M, but if you like I can lend you lots of arabian pop!
Today I'm listening to Metallica, the black album - Enter Sandman etc. I think it's upsetting the workies next door.

nah i'll stick to "master of puppets" i think.
MoP is my favourite but I don't have it on CD, only an old scratchy chewed up tape... If anyone wishes to take pity on me for this and...er... *whispers* burn me a copy, I would be very grateful.Dadaist wrote:

Nicky, of course, wouldn't be.

Funnily enough, Ali and I were just listening to some their stuff recently. It'll be a fun night for sure.Marya wrote:Suspect ecm might have an answer to this one;
should I go along to see Hayseed Dixie next Thu?
We were thinking about going to see the Trash Can Sinatras at the Brunton Halls next week. I really like them so it could be a goer. Tickets are only a tenner and it's "local"!
Major dilema occurs next month when Turin Brakes play Queen's Hall on a Thursday then the McGarrigles play the very next night.
Poor Ali's kicking himself as I jumped in and got the Brakes tickets and I'm sure he'd rather have gone seen the Ladies. But, two nights out in the week at our age is dangerous you know.
We've seen the ladies several times before so..........

Ecm, how about you and Ali start a local radio station? I'm sure it's pretty easy to set up (Dadaist - would you be willing to assist here?) and with your eclectic musical tastes you are the obvious candidates.
Of course you could throw in a few old Valves tracks and feature new recordings and demos by local musicians. Radio Portobello, guaranteed front page link from Portobello Online - how about it? I'm sure you would get a few offers from 'guest' DJ's as well.

Hayseed Dixie playing Edinburgh..? Shurely shome mishtake. I have a chum who has been going on about them incessantly for a fortnight. He even gave me a CD of theirs, but I could'nt face listening to it.
Now, Easy All Stars "Dub Side of the Moon" -- that was a great album of cover versions.

I don't believe in Beatles.

Can't wait for Radio Portobello!

The Dixies are at Studio 24 in Calton Road. If it wasn't a work night and for the other gigs pending, I'd quite like to go.Dakota wrote:Hayseed Dixie playing Edinburgh..? Shurely shome mishtake. I agree that Dub side of the Moon is excellent, Dakota.
Have you ever heard Senor Coconuts and his Orchestra performing Latin American dance versions of Kraftwerk songs? That's another good one!

Good taste
Bob, we got strangely similar tastes in music. I too am a child of the punk generation. (Oh and I wrote in wee letters this time
just for you)

Senor Coconut in his former self as Atom Heart (Uwe Schmidt) is a favourite of mine.ecm wrote:The Dixies are at Studio 24 in Calton Road. At least he had the grace to change his name for different projects - I would say I was a Shamen fan, but I hate anything they produced after "En-Tact".Dakota wrote:It's VERY different to the Coconuts stuff.
And yes, Dadaist, different means better, on this occasion.
Not that I'm making a direct comparison to Coconut/Atom as I'm sure the Kraftwerk covers stuff is cool, I just haven't heard it.
Anyway - check out how enormous this guy's discography is :

Dakota, from your post you seem to be assuming that I was going to jump on you or something. I may be confrontational when it comes to politics, but ambient music?
*sings* "you're going home in a ******* ambience!!"
No worries.
Ambient music is party to acrimony and splits just like any enterprise involving more than one person - I used to be on the idm mailing list where a nasty spat spilled out into the public domain, involving the then Black Dog frontman Ken Downie, who was irate about not getting that month's royalty payment from Warp records.
He proceeded to post on the list a detailed breakdown of every Black Dog track produced and how much they had been paid - or in the case of compilation appearances *whether* they had ever been paid - it was a fascinating read.
I'm not sure if it was around that time that 2 members quit the Black Dog and became Plaid.
Rumour has it (from the Orb mailing list, which, er, had to kick off one of the band's early contributors Kriss "Thrash" Weston for being nasty to, um, his fans) that the latest offering from Black Dog Towers is very good indeed.
I also have a cassette issued by Mixmag which has LX Paterson on one side and Mixmaster Morris on the other - all whale noises and Hillage guitars - but only superficially mellow because Morris and LX don't speak to each other....

Other half has gone out, so after considering ambient stuff, I plumped instead for a compilation which includes Metallica, Savatage, Nirvana and Dio, amongst others. I'm only allowed to play it when there's nobody here
.
