I would have liked to but it was our daughter's birthday yesterday and we had tickets for Aladdin. We had reserved a box as we were unfortunate enough to be seated next to what I can only assume was a borstal school outing last year. That's what's wrong with panto - too many children!
The view of the stage was restricted but we all enjoyed the show. I'm not a big fan of panto but this was very professional, high production value stuff. There is an amazing flying carpet sequence towards the end with a great line about it being safer than a beanstalk!
Not much difference I suppose - fat, middle-aged people in ridiculous costumes.
I wouldn't dare say that to Ms Fife though.

I hope she did too, in spite of problems with the entertainment...!
Glad to hear Aladdin is good - we always go on Hogmanay. We take my brother and his family who barely understand a word of it. We were at Jack and the Beanstalk yesterday at the Brunton, with St Phillip's toddler group - really enjoyed it in spite of having a difficult day. Slightly freaked myself - never mind the bairns - at the scene where Jill is kidnapped at knifepoint, though... Not a recommended show for wee ones - far too scary. But very funny.

All I really need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt!

The soundtrack to Grand Theft Auto San Andreas (Ali's getting down with his homies in the hood - again
).
The music is excellent. Lots of great country stuff and some very funky, dirty stuff too.
At the moment it's a number by the Gap Band called "You dropped a bomb on me" which I'd never heard before and it's soooo groovy, I may have to get up and dance around a bit.
Excuse me.

Raw Power - Iggy and the Stooges. Turn it up.
I'm obviously gutted at the news the "Busted" have split but I'm going to console myself tonight by watching;
Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus
An Arena documentary following 'alt country' singer Jim White on a road trip into the heart of the poor white American South through a gritty terrain of churches, prisons, truck stops and coal mines.
ÂÂ
Fri 14 Jan, 22:40-00:05 BBC4
Should be as easy on the eye as it is on the ear
*met the lovely Jim at his gig at the Belle Angel a year or so back*sigh*

This is a repeat, Marya and it is worth watching. Not a huge fan of the man myself so probably won't watch it again.Marya wrote:I'm obviously gutted at the news the "Busted" have split but I'm going to console myself tonight by watching;

La Belle Angel was a great wee venue. It's a shame it's gone now.

It's a sad day in Joppa.
The Pal of Porty household was only just getting over the sad demise of 'S Club 7' and now we have to handle the equally tragic 'Busted' bust up!
On the brighter side - does this mean I will be getting offers of over £100 for each of Pal of Porty's Son's two Busted CD's?

Justice delayed is justice denied.
Well, did you enjoy it, Marya? I watched the last half hour or so.Marya wrote: Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus

There sure are some weird and wonderful folks down in the deep south!
David Johansen still looks good, don't you think? I thought he was dead!

Looking fwd to Earplugs and Eyeliner: The Iggy Pop Story, 2130 - 2230 on Radio 2 tonight.
Fun House is possibly my favourite rock 'n' roll album of all time.

It certainly wasn't the Deep South of 'Gone with the Wind" that's for sure. My husband kept on saying, "We've got to go there" as Jim drove past more abandoned rusty vehicles and trailer parks, then they'd interview another guy in prison/a bar/a church and I'd take another quick gulp of wine, and say that I wasn't so sure it'd be my dream holiday.ecm wrote:Well, did you enjoy it, Marya? Husband also kept repeating that you'd never have guessed that Jim had been a model and that he'd changed a lot since we'd seen him.
Hadn't heard of David Johansen before but he certainly looked as if he's got a bit of life still in him! Do you know anything about the "Handsome Family"?

David Johansen was the singer in the New York Dolls.
the Handsome Family are one of my favourite bands and are supposed to be excellent live although I haven't managed to see them yet.
I can thoroughly recommend their "In the Air" CD - especially a track called "so much wine" -
So Much Wine
I had nothing to say on Christmas day when you threw all your clothes in the snow. When you burnt your hair, knocked over chairs, I just tried to stay out of your way. But when you fell asleep with blood on your teeth, I got in my car and drove away. Listen to me, Butterfly, there's only so much wine you can drink in one life and it will never be enough to save you from the bottom of your glass. Where the state highway starts I stopped my car. I got out and stared up at the stars. As meteors died and shot cross the sky, I thought about your sad, shining eyes. I came back for my clothes when the sun finally rose but you were still passed out on the floor.
reminds me of a night in with ecm, really!!
Ah! The New York Dolls - at least I've heard of them
Thanks for the recommendation and the lyric sample Ali.
It's a definite next purchase
(BTW I've just realised why the lyrics sounded so familiar - "So much wine" is no.11 on CD2 of the "Beyond Nashville" collection that we've got.....Doh!

I have never fallen asleep with blood on my teeth, ever.
I have, however, woken in the middle of the night to find to my alarm that my top lip was stuck fast to my teeth. I had to splash hot water on to loosen it.
This was after a night drinking copious amounts of Smirnoff Ice.
Must be the sugar content or something.
I got a terrible fright.

Hmm, 'gigs' eh... thanks for the info.
I had a lovely jaunt across the M8 today listening to Paul Gambuccini (sp?) interviewing people about and playing bits from The Who Live at Leeds from (gulp) 1970!
What a superb band in every respect.
It sent me home to dig out some Who stuff only to find its disappeared with the exception of the Tommy and Quadrophenia albums
They must have gone to the same place as my long lost copy of 'we have a dream' which vanished some years ago (sob)
Pah! to the beatles and Pah! to the stones when theres bands like the Who about!
From a bit later (1986) I was playing Red Box - The Circle and the Square at the weekend, now that I've finally established a place for the turntable, hurrah!

ps - any hifi buffs see my resurrected thread about cabling please?

That just might be enough to tempt Homer (or Mr 299!) back on Mr M. Our...oh,OK...his turntable is heavily used for both The Beatles and The Rolling Stonesmr magnolia wrote:

Spent a happy half hour dancing with the magnoliettes this afternoon to the jigs and reels (or whatever they call them in america) from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Will the Circle be Unbroken. they loved it, but insisted I turn the volume down a bit (I shall remind them in later years)
we moved seamlessly into the Bowie singles collection but i called it quits when i began to wonder how wise it was to have a 4 yr old and a 2yr old running round singing 'hot tramp, I love you so'...(especially with mrs m and the wean due back at any minute)
