I discovered an Italian version of the old Khushis last night. It's called Trattoria Siciliana, located in a basement in Union Street, has pictures on the wall of pasta dishes, none of which can be ordered, looks like a cafe and has a wee chef who, when somene questioned the sauce on their pasta, came out from the kitchen and said "well that's how I make it" FAB!

Three starters, three mains and a side salad - £30 and it was excellent, especially the anchovy bruschetta. It's bring your own bottle, no corkage charge. The food was excellent.

Saying that I like fresh anchovies but hate the ones you get from jars/tins. :?

Seeing as Sandra's job is probably safe for another 4 years, we went out for a celebration lunch today to Kings Wark in Leith.

I've never had the food in there before, but Sandra has and raved about the fish and chips, which she had again this time. Massive piece of fish in a light, crispy batter with what looked, and tasted, like homemade tartare sauce.

I'd not had any breakfast this morning, so the rumbling tummy made me opt for a starter as well as a main course. My seafood chowder starter was perfect, fairly thick and studded with potato and a variety of seafood - I couldn't identify it all, but there definitely were mussels, clams, smoked haddock and salmon. All that and fresh bread to mop up the liquid, finger-licking good. A meal in itself, and actually available in main course size if you so desired.

For main course, I had belly of pork with black pudding and mash. Now, this may not sound like a big deal, but I haven't even been able to look at belly of pork without feeling queasy since I was about 12. Memories of the rubbery, chewy fatty meat that my Mum used to serve up have put me off it for over 25 years. However, as these 'cheap' cuts of meat are trendy again now and undergoing a revival, I trusted the chef at Kings Wark and decided to take the plunge......and I'm so glad I did!

This was nothing like Mum (sorry!) used to make. Crisp flavoursome crackling covered unctuous melt-in-the-mouth fat and tender delicious meat. The black pudding and mash were the perfect accompaniements...as was a nice cold pint of cider . I think I can safely say I'm now over my belly-of-pork phobia! And I'll be back at Kings Wark soon, although I still doubt they could cure me of my tripe phobia :pale:.

Went to First Coast in Dalry tonight for T

It was very good - 2 courses for £9.95, recommended! :D

We went early but if going later probably best to book, it was very busy.

I had the thai chicken salad and peach and amaretto trifle - very yummy :D

I had the pork belly with cous-cous, then chocolate custard with coffee ice-cream.

V good, and well worth it. We've not been for a while, but have promised ourselves to make the effort more often.......

I went there a while back with friends and it was great. They do a version of the Asturian dish fabada (a northern Spanish bean stew) which made me homesick for my old flat in Asturias.

I had lunch at All Bar One on Saturday...except I didn't. The service has never been brilliant but they failed to bring me my main course...and then failed to bring me my pudding. We were only there an hour and a half so maybe I was expecting a bit much  but my companions managed to get fed. Still, made for a cheap lunch since I left as hungry as I arrived. I really id have a liquid lunch  .

The family had a lovely meal in the rather weird Sicilian bistro on Union St tonight. The food was great, and it's BYOB. We felt we got slightly ripped off, being charged the same for the kids as for the adults, but on the whole it's very good value - starters and puddings are mostly £2.50 and the main courses are all £5.95. Really enjoyed the food.

Um...posted at the same time as you PB - I was referring to First Coast, not the place you mention, sorry!

No worries BB. I was just dreaming about the north of Spain - have travelled to and through the Asturias many times. One of my favourite places is Santilliana del mar or St Vincente is nice too- good campsite there. Galicia is definately my overall favourite though, its the albarino and amazing sea food. Mini Pb was conceived there, Mr Pb puts it down to a month of Galician sea food! Does that make mini Pb part Gallego do you think?

BB - it just cam to me after I had posted that the places I mentioned were more Cantabria than into the Asturias, sorry.

Hey Dadaist, cant let your Kebab Mahal recommendation go unsupported! It is just THE best curry cafe in town. Without doubt. I've lived in Rusholme, home to Manchester's curry mile, so I've got a bit of form. Just take a look at the range of people eating there and you know that KM is the real thing.

Not tasted their wares yet, but have heard that the Central Mosque Kitchen gives KM a run for it's money, on price and quality. 8)

Ah, a place well known to myself and Homer...

I remember once in my hometown newpaper there was an ad for a new Indian restuarant which said "Authentic Rusholme chef"!

Remember this thread? We tried a new place in Leith last night. Dinner for two included oysters, pigeon, venison, lobster, wine and coffee. Sounds expensive? Would you believe the bill came to under £60? All beautifully cooked and friendly service. Great value - give it a go.

Another great Leith restaurant is Tapa (used to be FitzHenry long long time ago). Great food, feels very authentically Spanish, food very quickly served and atmosphere is great.
