Excuse the spam... But haven't had the time recently to work through the backlog of photos taken - have ones from April waiting to be uploaded.

Here are 4 from the weekend - Aberlady & Gullane:

And 2 recent-ish ones from Portobello Beach:

So for those of you with a decent camera (i.e. one with a large enough aperture to take a decent night photo).

I reckon that (if the sky is clear) there will be an awesome photo opportunity at around 7.15pm tonight on the beach.

The moon should be full and rising over Cockenzie*. I'm going to take my camera out, but it's a cheapy digital job, so the photos probably wont come out very well.

*Based on the almost full moon rising at around this time last night.

Edit: I've found a calculator :

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/a ... =-12&day=1

looks like rise is going to be at 20.17 and about 10 degrees further east. Should still get a good photo around 20.45. if you can be bothered going out that late.

Good shout Grunk, but bloody hell it was cold! -3C easy; and with my gloves left at work. I traipsed out with two cameras & three lenses and got nowt.

Who was taking the shots from around the Dalriada? Left your flash on ;)

Oh the way back spied a great shot looking along Musselburgh Rd with the streetlights framing the moon - but my hands couldn't move to take the photo!

EDIT: Mr Met says it's -3, feels like -7C...

Very smart new gates recently installed in Brighton Park:

And I'm impressed with the splendid new walkway constructed in Figgate Park:

And interesting to discover that the little shop in Southfield Place used to sell fishing tackle:

This was Thursday in the Lake District. We had decided to do the classic Fairfield Horseshoe walk from Ambleside. It's a 10.5 mile walk with a total ascent of 3450 feet. The first 3 hours of our walk were all uphill. The rain became steadily heavier and the mist became so dense that visibility was down to about 20 metres. We were overtaken by an Irish guy who was doing the same route. Just before we made the highest point of the walk we met him again. He had lost his way in the mist and had abandoned the walk and was returning the way he came with another couple he had met. This didn't augur well but we pressed on. A little later, just as we were about to head off on the wrong path ourselves, the mist began to clear from right to left and the path ahead revealed itself, along with a spectacular view of the valley below.

Several hours later, as we were making our way back to our accommodation, we met our Irish friend again in a local hostelry. He had got lost again on the way back, ended up several miles off route and had hitched a lift back to Ambleside.

Later, I found this:
The summit of Fairfield is very flat with many cairns and paths. It is easy to get lost in hill fog and there are precipitous slopes to the north and west awaiting the unwary: make sure you have a compass, and can use it, before you set out.

I've got a photo of a frog too... A dead one on my path (now sitting a-top my wall). What sort of frog lives so close to the sea, other than a dead one?

I mind a few years back my son found a frog on the beach
The theory was that it may have been lifted by a bird from one of the garden ponds around here, then dropped.
So maybe one of your neighbours has a pond?

Matthew was very keen, but no. It was this little chap
<a href="http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v388/ ... 0001_8.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v388/ ... 0001_8.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
I very nearly smuggled back.

There was a nursing bitch on the waste ground nearby with 5 puppies. She was skin and bones poor thing. We fed her the time we were there and as we left discovered the neighbouring villa was also feeding her. They said they were arranging for her to be rescued, but in Turkey domestic pets are pretty low priority. I'm trying not to think about her

What sort of person photographs a dead frog? I know the PONGS calendar asked for 'quirky' , but isn't that a bit too Damien Hirst for Portobello tastes?

I was unaware it was dead. I thought it was just scared. My good wife is more observant than I.

Anyway, what sort of person then places the dead frog on top of their wall... Need to get a photo of that.

You can imagine the problems we used to have with Stray No. 666 whenever we went abroad  . I did know somebody who brought a dog back from abroad though - cost an absolute fortune for quarantine fees etc but she just couldn't leave him. He was a stray in Spain.

Beautiful frog Marya, thanks for that :D

The Brighton boys as I fondly call them are still doing well and performing their duties admirably although one of them (Ernie) is looking a bit arthritic these days and very much a wee old man.

Nice. Drove past Duddingston Loch on the way home. It has frozen over and now there is a blanket of snow lying on top of the ice.

Did anyone get photos of the snow-covered beach yet? My wife tells me that there was an army of snowmen there yesterday, which must have looked very bizarre. Wangi?
