Portobello Online and the Community Council

The forum is a PITA for some folks. Particulalry the ones that like to believe they speak for the whole community, you see them regularly in the evening newa. "the community will fight this" "it is well loved by the whole community" and so on. Normally they can speak without fear of being challenged, they enjoy the experience, as there is no forum in which they can be challenged. The longer they go on speaking without challenge the more they believe they do speak for the community. For example I'm sure that fairly recently Gemini claimed that PCATS represented 97% of the portobello community

Whew ... what a task that was ... reading through all this thread.
Can I just say for the record I'm, not a Porty resident, but I have had links with the area all my life and my aunty just moved away recently. I love Porty ... since I was a wee 3 year old wading in the waters and building sandcastles. You all live in a fabulous place and POL is a great way of advertising Rio Del Porty.
This forum is one of the best I've ever been on ... and I've been on a few that are so shallow and bad-tempered, it fair takes your breath away. Some forums are run by complete nincompoops. POL isn't. It's intelligent, funny, serious and comic with light handed mods ... and I don't understand why Bob's being got at, at all. I suppose I'm just not into internal politicking.
I know nobody on this forum ... except as they are presented ... and the it's the same for me. None of you know me ... except as a contributor and my place-name quizzes. I'm enjoying my time here. Do you HAVE to know more? Don't we have enough of a police state as it is?
As for the CC ... well, my encounters with several of them have completely alienated me from them. CCs are full of their own self-seeking importance with just a sprinkling of really decent, giving people amongst the rest of the chaff. I give them a wide berth ... and they don't affect me.
I don't like when forums get caught up in malarkey. It ruins it for the majority, who are here because they want to be ... not because they need to be for community reasons or political recognition. Get over it already and work out something that benefits you and your community ... stop the c rap getting in. Arguing is fine for some things. but it's not debate I see that's going on in this thread. I hate the personal stuff.
Maybe I'm naive, but I really dislike all that c rap which is why I THINK Anarchy is better. (google it and find out what it really means)
Gods, I've rabbitted on so much ... rant ended, off soapbox ... night night. Please don't shout at me!

From the minutes of the October CC meeting:
243.8h Portobello Online: no report this time. Stephen Hawkins wondered when he would receive an answer to his complaint. Diana Cairns observed that she had asked for an item to be withdrawn from Porty Online, but after she had been told it had been, she could still find it with Google. The Chairman agreed to discuss these points with Maria Devoy.

Dave Connelly said "I was sorry to hear that POL is distancing its self from the community council, (May have picked that up wrongly though) and forming a public interest company, could someone please explain what that means in lay persons terms. How will it change POL and the rights of those who have an interest in it/post on it?"
Anyone from Admin care to comment on Dave's comments elsewhere?

I announced last night that the CC sub-group were disbanding. For a variety of reasons and through no fault of anyone involved it just hasn't worked. Instead, the plan is for POL to become an interest group on the CC, much like "The Portobello Reporter" is at present.ali wrote:Dave Connelly said "I was sorry to hear that POL is distancing its self from the community council, (May have picked that up wrongly though) and forming a public interest company, could someone please explain what that means in lay persons terms. With the support of our techie team of Paul and Lee, Bob, Paula and myself are in the process of setting up a Community Interest Company (CIC). This is a limited company which as the name suggests is run for the benefit of the community and not for individual profit. It will make no difference to users of POL other than the CC will no longer play a part in the complaints procedure. It does, however, mean an even greater commitment to POL for Bob, Paula and myself.
We would continue to be represented on the CC, to publish the minutes of meetings, to feed back useful information etc. and to welcome their support and input.
