Any one remember when it was like this?

Our summer job was collecting all the empty juice bottles at the end of the dayand then taking them back to the shop to get 3d on each one!

Better than that, you could get into the Bungalow ( the other cinema in Bath Street - now a furniture warehouse?) simply by handing the bottles over at the ticket booth. Three bottles equalled 9d - enough for a saturday morning matinee.

Great pic PoP. The thing I remember about the bottles is that some were No Deposit No return, how annoying was that? Don't think it was Hendry's?

Anyone recall the name of the woman/family who ran the donkey's? Annie? Very little space for them on that day.

The donkeys used to be stabled down the wee lane from the end of Mentone Avenue down to the school - there's houses there now. They stank!!

What year was that photo taken - roughly?

I believe the photo was taken in the 1950's.

I was told that it appeared in the Evening News and is from their archives.

I guess everyone goes to Costa Blanca now!

I used to have to walk past the Hendry's juice factory on the way to Abbeyhill Primary School. The place had a really distinctive smell about it.

Then, just a bit further up the road was the Holyrood Laundry and that had a fab smell too.

Ah, smelly memories.................

They were definitely Hendry's juice bottles that paid a deposit. The other main brand of juice you found was Dunbars which also gave you 3d per empty bottle.

I actually rent a garage in Rosefiled and was told by someone that that was the last place the Beach donkeys were stable before they were retired. It does Look like it used to be a stable!

I think that may well be correct, I remember bumping into the donkeys the day after they moved from Rosefield , they were very, very unstable. In fact I thought Dobbin was going to top himself.

No way, when I had my previous business in Porty the donkey owner came to see me about a mortgage. She was still in the donkey business, I started in 82 and sold in 91, i would say it was maybe 87 and she may well have gone on longer.

There were rides for the kids on Portobello beach, at the bottom of Bath Street, in the first summer I was in that flat - 1995. I can't remember if it was donkeys or Shetlands, nor whether they were there the following year.

Don't know about donkies (or do we include ponies in that?) but I've got a photo of COC on a beach pony when she was about 2 which makes it about 16 years ago so probably not long after that (about 1988/89?)
