After each race Homer runs, people inevitably ask why he didn't do some good for others and get sponsored for his efforts? This year I joined in the chorus and suggested that he should run the Edinburgh Marathon as a Charity runner and he finally agreed. He picked Prostate Scotland as his nominated charity as both of us have had male relatives suffer from prostate disease and prostate cancer. Not surprising really, as nearly 1 in 2 of you men will be affected by prostate disease at some stage your lives and 1 in 13 will develop prostate cancer.
Homer is rubbish at asking for sponsorship and as one of those who nagged him into it I reckon I better help. If you'd like to too, then here's his page http://www.justgiving.com/bernarddevoy

Wow! That was quick! Many thanks Mr and Mrs Magbagpuss and Bob. You've helped Homer out of the starting blocks
I've been told - never catch me running one of these things in a month of Sundays! - that it really lifts the spirits to have support along the prom. Homer will be wearing no. 120 (and his charity vest) so if you spot him on the 31st, please give him some encouragement.

Homer has gone to bed early - don't think he could take much more of the sight of his brother and I swigging back a rather tasty red wine with our pasta.
He promises me he will make one of his rare postings on here to thank everyone personally for all their support once it is all over.
In the interim
Good luck to everyone running tomorrow, but especially Wangi, who is running in the relay once again and is also quietly doing his bit to raise money for charity http://www.justgiving.com/cslfirefly09

I'm not sure who you mean , but in previous years, Scott Balfour was in the 'over 60' category, so Bernie had better outrun him or hang up his trainers.Porty wrote: Marya how will Bernie do in against Scott balfour?

Thanks Maria - bit of a rollercoaster ride that one. Out of the team due to travel and then back in it on Friday due to somebody else having last minute travel changes. So -- really well prepared!Marya wrote:but especially Wangi, who is running in the relay once again and is also quietly doing his bit to raise money for charity http://www.justgiving.com/cslfirefly09
On the first (Portobello) stretch makes sure you cheer on Nicola (in my team R137) and R42 (I think that's the team, will be Terry -- our other / good team). I'm doing the Musselburgh to Port Seton leg again.
Thank you for the sponsorship.

We saw Homer going past the Community Garden at around 09:34, well up with the leaders. It's going to be tough going for everyone in this heat. I feel like I've made a marathon achievement myself. Getting out of bed in time was a feat in itself and I've now had to retire with chronic clapping fatigue.
It's great to see the beach and prom so lively with the marathon and the sailing event and this weather is a real bonus, unless you're running of course.

Many , many thanks for the sponsorship and support. I'm an old cynic at heart, but found the support on the Prom really uplifting, albeit a little early doors as far as the eventual outcome was concerned ! Thank God I finished the damned race. Special mention for the generosity in response to the thumbs up, I actually always run like an Iguanadon
Anyhoo, thanks again, my cousin and Prostate Scotland will be cock-a-hoop. Finishing time was 2:46:13, hard bloody work over the closing miles - I had a time related bet with a couple of guys at work for Prostate Scotland which paid off
.
Thanks again, great day. Look forward to my next post in a year's time!

If you can keep your head when all around are losing theirs, it probably means you've underestimated the gravity of the situation.
