Some figures about the ones which operate in our area (East team).

During December 2008:

2 wardens were on duty, working a cumulative total of 93 hours.

They issued 2 fixed penalty notices.

1 warning was issued.

4 people were reported for offences to the Procurator Fiscal.

You are a dedicated environmentalist, there's no denying. I guess you work directly or indirectly for the council? Are you an environmentalist with warden ambitions or simply a lay person?

I only ask cos my dad was a warden for a number of years but, rather foolishly, he didnt believe in environmentalism. No matter what contrary evidence was presented to him he was environmentally unsound.

I still recall the day that Jonathan Porrit appeared on a float at the porty festival and was literally swamped with admirers and serious protagonists. One lady, stepped up and and asked Jonno what his environmental priorities were?

He acknowledged and then smiled with the air of a man that had been asked the same question a hundred or maybe even one thousand times.

From one of her many email shots.

Dealing with Dog Fouling
From my own observations, walking around the streets and from my ‘postbag’ standards are slipping and there is more dog fouling. The local team has been short of environmental wardens but should soon be up to strength again. I have flagged up some areas for special attention – Pipe Street and Portobello High Street among them. To get in touch with the local team of wardens who deal with littering fly-tipping and dog fouling, email the local neighbourhood team on east.team@edinburgh.gov.uk and mark it for the attention of the local environmental warden team leader, Jacqui Renton.
Followed by an update today

Please accept my apologies (to some of you!) that the link to environmental wardens didn’t work. It may have gone past it’s ‘sell-by’ date. For the local team, the direct contact is Jacqui Renton, team leader, environmental wardens on 0131 669 1389 or email: jacqui.renton@edinburgh.gov.uk if you have difficulties with fly-tipping, dog fouling or littering in your area.

Saw a couple on the prom the other day
I was also surprised at the amount of dog mess around
Is it one large incontinent dog ar lots of wee ones?
What bugs me is the number of people that let their dogs run free without knowing where they go.
There is a spaniel regularly jumps the wall into our back green, no owner to be seen. Caught another dog in our green the other week. It manages to damage a rosemary bush and knock over a planter before being lifted back over the wall

Well im fairly pleased with the wardens at the moment.

The North team ones though not the ones for our area.

Myself and a co-worker managed to witness someone allowing their dog to foul without picking up the foul.

Within a matter of a couple of hours of my phone call the Senior warden and a constable from the NAU at Leith Polis station served the culprit with a fine.

Super work. Perhaps the fine will make them think twice.

2 wardens were on duty during the month working a cumulative total of 128 active duty hours.

They issued 5 fixed penalty notices.

2 warnings were issued by the wardens.

3 people were reported to the procurator fiscal for offences.

Hardly value for money, is it? The fines issued / reports made must barely scrape the wage costs.

128 active hours for the month between 2 people works out at 2 days a week.

Question 2 was: What is the total number of active duty hours worked by the environmental warden staff within the area of the city which is the responsibility of the east edinburgh local office, not including hours taken as sick leave, annual leave or any other type of leave.

Response 2 was: 128 hours were worked by Environmental warden staff during this period within the East Neighbourhood.

Perhaps he means 128 hours per member of staff.

Cllr Child. Mail shot. 24/2/09 wrote: Dealing with Dog Fouling
I know the vast majority of dog owners are highly responsible, pick up after their pets and are intensely irritated by those who do not. The Council’s environmental wardens have been giving the Portobello and Joppa more patrols and CCTV lately because people reported that standards had deteriorated. They have already issued one fine this month and talked to a large number of people walking their dogs, the vast majority of whom are very supportive of their work. Any dog owner found not to be picking up, immediately after their dog has fouled, will be subject to a £40 Fixed Penalty Notice under the Dog Fouling (Scotland) Act 2003. It would assist the wardens greatly if people have any further information like names, addresses or descriptions of culprits and/or their dogs - or times they might be out and about. Please do not hesitate to phone Greg McGown or Jacqui Renton, environmental wardens, on 669 1389.
