Portobello Online: Planning Applications

Post by Bob Jefferson » 13 Mar 2008, 19:13

We now have a local planning application section on Portobello Online. We are still testing it at this stage and it requires a little bit of refinement but we hope that you will find it useful.

Just go to the home page at porty.org.uk and click on 'Planning' or go directly to: http://porty.org.uk/planning/index.php

Please make use of it and feedback any problems or suggestions for improvement. All the information is on the Council planning portal - we have just extracted the local applications and created what we hope is a user-friendly facility.

It has been a lot of work for Paul and even more for him to keep it updated on a weekly basis. I certainly appreciate his efforts and I'm sure you do too.

What would you like next?

He's not doing this manually is he? Eeek! (I'd have thought he'd have a script to scrape the info off the council website)

I imagine most aren't interested in a regular look at this, but rather are very interested in something relevant that interests them (as in next to them, or likewise). Perhaps some sort of email notification based on criteria, or output the info as an RSS feed to allow subscription / notification of change on it?

I think Paul looked at a screen scraper solution originally. The current system involves a lot of copy and paste but we are now speaking to the people who put together the planning portal so there could be some changes in the way it works. I'm aware that there is something called Planning Alerts which we may be able to make use of once Edinburgh is signed up. I certainly don't want to give Paul more work than necessary so if we can find an easier way to do it then that's the way to go.

I'm very much aware of the problem with the Planning section and other areas we need to work on and Paul has promised to get to work on it ASAP.
