Nope. Ive never needed to go to the library.

Last summer I attempted to find the Post Office. I had to ask local shopkeeper Jav who helpfully told me it was in the co-op, I had to hold my hands up and admit I didnt know where that was either.

Co-op in Porty not a place I really go, and I tend to use the Great Junction Street Post Office.

Word of the week at work is cogniscent...

Fail to believe that somebody cannot be cogniscent of the community they live in. For real? How could somebody find this site, yet not find the post office or library?!?

Yours bewildered/L

If I really wanted to know where the library was id just head to google or have a wee wonder about. Its not like its hard to find. Just never had to go. I read a little but much prefer to own a copy rather than rent it so I buy my books off the net.

Knowing where the library is would have no impact on my life so why bother seeking it out. Ive been in Porty for three years and ive not missed it, so im sure i can manage another three years.

Porty isnt somewhere that I call home. And have never felt a real need to be really well acquainted with it. I dont know anyone in Porty and I dont really go anywhere in Porty apart from Costcutters, Fords and Greggs, oh yeah, and the bus stops to get a bus to work.

When I came to Porty I was working crazy overtime hours, often working 18h hours a day seven days when we were short staffed. That was my life for enarly two years, overtime left right and centre. I rarly took annual leave and I can only remember a few saturdays and sundays that I never worked overtime.

Work became my life and now I live to work.

I cant resist to stay back a few extra hours here or there. Sad it is but thats my life. Since May ive onyl had one full day off, that was the second strike day. Even today Im going in for a few hours, and same again the morra but will stay on for an extra couple of unpaid overtime. So im not sure where Id have the time to visit the library and choosing a book etc; etc;

Im not around Porty much to even have the chance to visit the library, unless I missed some time at work. Now Ive answered as full as I can to let you know why I dont know where the library is or where the post office & co-op was I dont anything further to say on the matter.

Michael, that sounds, to me at least, pretty sad but I'm not passing judgement. I'm sure lots of people lead similar lives, living somewhere but not really feeling part of the community or engaging with it. I'm glad you enjoy your job so much. I'm bored rigid by mine and spend as little time there as possible. I do practically no overtime, even though I could use the money.

Libraries nowadays are much more than just places to borrow books. If you ever took some time off you would discover that it's a great place to hang out, read the papers and have a coffee. They have free internet, a great CD section and often host interesting exhibitions. They also have a very good local history section. It is in fact arguably the focal point of the community.

When I first moved to Portobello I spent weeks just wandering around, getting to know the place. It was my new home and I wanted to discover every nook and cranny. But I guess a lot of people are just passing through.

I must agree with Bob . I love Portobello and feel it a unique , diverse place to live. Please do take a wander around and then you may want to take some time off to enjoy yourself in it. Luckily unlike Bob I love my job but still treasure time off , get out my friend and smell the coffee ......... there are enough places to go for one .
May I be presumptious and ask a question ? All the working overtime you do , are you going to be Porty's 1st Duncan Bannatyne ???? Is it all part of a cunning master plan?Remember us when you're minted!!!!
If you ever want to know where anything is ask us , unbiased , truthful info is something even google can't do .

Sorry Bob Jefferson, im sure the Council will be most impressed that your so keen to get people into one of their libraries, but I have internet at home, if I want a cd I buy it or download something from itunes etc etc; I cant be converted im affraid. And Im sure there must be more people than me who dont frequent the library.

Im sure Porty is a wonderful place but Porty for me is just somewhere to crash for the night.lol. I work in Leith so tend to do my bits & peices down here, when I meet up with my friends we normally do that up town as we are all scattered accross the city, I shop via the internet , so dont really need to use Porty for anything other than having an abode.
