Kitcheners Deli

Post by Bob Jefferson » 20 Sep 2008, 17:42

Although local planning applications are now automatically updated on the POL Planning section, I hadn't checked it for a while. So it came as a surprise to find that Kitcheners has an application in for a change of use from cafe/deli to just cafe.

Details here

However, I think it makes a lot of sense. I have always felt that the space they had wasn't big enough to run both sections successfully. The cafe space is too cramped with a bottleneck entrance/exit and a very limited food prep area. Losing the deli would be a shame but perhaps it presents someone else with an opportunity?

Anyone have more info?

Not as far as I know. The applicant is K Morrill.

Personally think an application the other way round would make more sense. Plenty of cafes in Portobello, but not many delis...

Strange one not sure quite what to make of it. From a planning perspective I'm a wee bit surprised that there is a change of use required.

And from a commercial perspective I'm even more surprised that the recently trumpeted formula for success is being tampered with.

There was work being carried out yesterday at the former Portobello Cobblers next door. So have the owners of Kitcheners bought it and are planning to knock through? Now that might make sense. But in that case wouldn't you go for an extended cafe with a larger prep area and a separate entrance/exit and perhaps still keep a deli section?

According to the lady in the shop, it's being split into two businesses: the deli and the cafe, one in the cobblers and the other where the deli is now.

aounds good idea as it would be a shame to lose the Deli.
