The £9k carts left to gather dust

Post by Bob Jefferson » 10 Nov 2007, 15:14

Extract from today's EN:

The £9k carts left to gather dust
FOUR electric dust carts which cost taxpayers £9000 each have been branded a waste of money because they can't cope with Edinburgh's streets.

The battery-powered carts were bought nearly two years ago but have been gathering dust in council depots ever since.

They were meant to make the life of council rubbish collectors easier but sources say they quickly proved too cumbersome for manoeuvring around the city - and could not be used on hills.

Council chiefs today insisted they were still trying to "identify the best locations" to use the machines, with the flat Portobello Promenade being one option.

Labour's environment spokeswoman, Councillor Maureen Child, said the decision to buy the carts would almost certainly have been made by officials.

"I know nothing about electric carts or why they were bought," she said.

"It's quite right to ask the question why four were purchased instead of just hiring them.

"Perhaps we could sell the barrows to a local authority that can accommodate them."

I think that a more appropriate question would be "Who sanctioned the purchase off these carts without them having been tested on the streets of Edinburgh???"

Perhaps there are some local authorities in the Netherlands that need 4 'nearly new, low mileage, one stupid owner dust carts!'

Eck, you are perfectly correct, what a complete waste of money, The money could have spent on far better things.

I would suggest that the £36 grand could have been better spent on paying for some new street cctv cameras!
