Porty Triathlon cancelled

Post by BeachBum » 01 Aug 2008, 13:12

Its off!

According to BBC news website the event has been cancelled this year due to the Police raising traffic fears that they dont seem to have had a problem with in previous years.

Down here in Rathbone land our local half marathon was cancelled after 23 years of trouble free running because the police considered it a traffic risk.

Same with our local fireworks display on November 5 ----- it could distract motorists on the A1.
I have nothing to say and I'm going to say it.

Between 'safety concerns' and the escalating cost of public liability insurance it is becoming increasingly difficult to stage anything.

It is a real shame that the triathlon has had to be cancelled as I know that Bruce Kidd has worked very hard to build this up to be a prestigious event. Portobello is the perfect venue and we should be pulling out all the stops to make it happen, not putting obstacles in its path. Even if the organisers do get assurances from the police for next year, how are they going to regain the confidence of the triathletes after this year's debacle?
