Post by deby » 27 Apr 2008, 01:17

Hi everyone

I am new to this group and this is my first posting

I live in Australia and do most my researching through the internet

i am and have been trying to find out how to access the Portobello Cemetery as i know we have a CUMMINGS family plot in there with several family members

back in 1976 i visited the grave site and have 1 only photo of the head stone but it is unreadable

i found a website saying NOW PRIVATE PROPERTY

could someone please help me with how or who i can contact for further information

thanks

Hi and welcome, Deby!

Edinburgh City Council runs the graveyard - it is the lodge that is private.

I'd advise you to contact the Council .... although their website doesn't seem to be working properly at the moment!

Thankyou for the welcome and thankyou for the info link

i am sure that the area of Portobello is a high interest for myself with researching my family but so far i only have the final place of rest here. the rest shows them living in Pencaitland, Dalkeith, Saltoun and Airdire

the surnames are CUMMINGS, DINGWALL, COCHRANE, DAVIDSON, WATSON pus others from around scotland

most of the CUMMINGS were married at ST GILLES in Edinburgh then early 1900's started moving away

my info is resonably limited due to be unable to access records aprt from scotlands people that can mount up in costs

again thankyou

Was trying to find a website I used for tracing some of my relatives.
Know it was free but can't mind which one it was.
Suppose it might have been a trial period

If I find it I'll post a link

I finally remembered where I was looking.
Dont know if it's much help to you Deby
I was looking for relatives killed in Wars or on Active Service

http://www.cwgc.org/debt_of_honour.asp?menuid=14

is free to search and covers Commonwealth as well as UK, it will list where the war grave/memorial is.
Found my dads brother and some of Mr Soupys mum's uncles listed there

I think another site was Scotlandspeople.gov.uk but it does charge, may have been a free trial when I was looking around

Well i have to say i wasnt too impressed with the contact i made

i got a reply stating for 12 pounds they will have a look for my family

i then try to explain that it WASNT for researching but tried to explain that as far as i know i am now the ONLY LIVING relative to this family and that i was after information eg: when does the plot expire, is there a maintence fee and how much and could i place my contact details with them in regards to the CUMMINGS family plot

i then recieved another email again staing for 12 pound they will search for the plot (grrrrr) :( guess they dont want my money for the upkeeping

could someone please tell me, is there only one cemetry in Portobello? as i just come across Brunstane, Portabello on google maps

befor i send 12 pound off i better make sure its to the right place

thanks

Thanks Poppy

i will give that a try if a can narrow it down it might make things easier

at times it can be hard trying to find a place when you live on the other side of the world and dont have the local knowledge of where something is

all i know is that my grandparents always said that the plot was in the Portobello cemetry

as i said before i went there back in 1976 but have no idea excatly where it was i was only 14yo and sat in the back of the car not looking at the scenery (silly me)

thanks
take care
