Portobello Cobblers

Post by Lou » 16 Apr 2008, 22:18

Just as I was passing tonight I saw a notice in the window saying that they have ceased trading but the owner of the shop is opening on Saturday 26th April 10am til 4pm for anyone to collect their belongings.

Has anyone else noticed that Fillups (the fairly new takeaway on the High Street) has been closed for the last few weeks? Anyone know why?

To be honest I'm not surprised.
I had keys cut there that wouldn't work and they were less than helpful, got my money back in the end.
I think there were a few others with similar problems- did someone not get banned?

They ruined a pair of my favourite sling backs by not stapling the new heel. I had to bin them and they were pretty expensive shoes  . I've also had keys cut there which didn't work. So, no tears from me!

Pay no heed Epy, I like that trashy look in a woman.

I think what drove the Cobblers out of business was probably this thread:

I've been banned from the shoe repair shop

Uncannily similar, in fact, to what happened at the Blue Bean a few years back.

That place had been a bit erratic on the opening hours front long before anyone got themselves banned - I had such trouble getting a repair back that I stopped using them a couple of years ago.

But we still have Woodwares for key-cutting and the Wool Shop for cobbling...

It was never the same after it changed hands a few years back, it kind of lost its sole. It wasn't long before tongues were wagging and word spread about the erratic service. In the end the owner took to his heels in an attempt to avoid tacks.

Yes, that thread just proves how upset I was/am about my lovely sling backs

I remember my Mum thought so, along with pierced ears! My Aunt paid for us both to get our ears pierced, when I was 14 and she was 45. My Mum really struggled to hold her tongue

It took my Mum a while to accept that getting your ears pierced didn't get you pregnant . I got mine done when I was about 14. Between that and the sling backs she was distraught about my moral welfare  . I put her right over the edge when I cropped my hair and dyed it orange.....

Remember when shaggy perms and henna were all the rage? I made the mistake of doing both at the same time. My hair turned orange too, but I still thought it was great, until my Mum sent me a postcard with a picture of a highland cow on it and the message, 'This reminded me of you.' She was also fond of pointing out to everyone anytime we looked at family photos that I had inherited my Dad's 'big nose'. I don't know how I managed to have any self-confidence at all!

Oh yes, it's just as well we're made of stern stuff  . I remember once Mr E's Aunty said to me "That's a lovely coat - but not on you"

My Mum's favourite phrase was "Where did you get that awfie lookin........dress, coat, hairstyle........"

The for lease sign went up on Friday afternoon.

Spoke to the owner of the cobblers, she is putting it on the market soon.
