Porty Posties

Post by ifstar » 06 Mar 2008, 14:08

Not sure if this is all over Portobello or just near me but every morning I pass about half a dozen posties who are carrying a small bundle of mail by hand. It actually looks like one guy does my street (Ramsay Place) and another postie does Mentone Avenue.

Anyone know why they aren't just carrying a bag of letter around now? I would guess it's either a) some health and safety law that says they can only carry X Kg of letter or b) there are too many posties and they need to give them all something to do.

I live in in next street from sorting office and I see posties putting their shouldre bags full of mail into their cars most days, ive always presumed that once they have driven to the starting point of their rounds they wear the bag over the shoulder but perhaps not and Ive observed my postie wearing a shoulder bag.

Nothing to do with Portobello posties, but earlier this week I had to get a Leith postie released from a broken down lift in the Banana flats.

My postie has been issued with a wee trolley. Much more sensible than lugging a heavy bag on one shoulder; that must lead to lots of back problems. I've noticed several local posties 'abandoning' their heavy bag at one house and then delivering a small bundle to nearby houses.

Think one of our posties uses his car, parks it near the middle of the street then takes out a bundle at a time to deliver, certainly safer than leaving the bag at the foot of the stair as he climbs up 3 flights with the bills and "one day only sales" mail

You probably have the same postie as us Sandra, I'm not sure about week days but he always uses his car on a Saturday. They also use these grey boxes to pick up more mail on their rounds.

I assumed that one 'walk' close to sorting office had been done away with and the mail for that 'walk' was split among the workers and delivered before their own 'walk' commenced. A great way off cutting back on the wage bill.
