Brighton Place - renumbering

Re 16 Brighton Place - A word of caution:

I had a quick look at work today and there's a problem in that Brighton Place was renumbered in the first half of last century (50s?) which means any records re number 16 in 1904 won't be today's number 16..... I don't have access to the records pre 1906 at my present place of work unfortunately.

Poppy, thanks for that info. Presumably the deeds for the current no. 16 will reflect the re-numbering at the point it changed and perhaps we can work out from that which house was no. 16 in 1904. If that makes sense.

I'm sure I've seen houses in Bellfield Street that look as if they'd been renumbered at some point too.
Often wondered at that
Of course it was Melville Street when I was young.

Ach, Arachnid and Izzie we may have been in the same crowds in Brighton Park!

My impression and experience is that re-numbering has been necessary in older streets where large properties have sold off garden ground over the decades - a real pain for researchers, I'd imagine! The High Street has been renumbered at least twice from what I've seen!!

Nah, they number them in the first place that they'll never have to renumber them.

The renumbering seems to have come about because of the tenemants being built on the other side of the road from the Georgian villas - before that the villas were 1 2 3 4 5 6 etc in a row.

No of course not, they would think you were mad. Leave that sort of thing to me.

I did some googling. Is it the good doctor then? I don't think I have met him.

That's unfair - I was working. Anyway, I'll just knock on his door and say I'm a friend of yours.
