Leith weekend market

We found the weekend market down at the Shore in Leith today by accident. Apparently it has been on for the last 3 weekends and is due to continue. It's just at the back of the Waterfront. Quite small but worth a visit - lots of organic food and drink stalls (wine, grape juice, cheeses and bread), Aberdeen Angus beef burgers, crepes, natural remedies, bags, art, jewelry, etc. Really nice to walk around, and on a day like today - could be anywhere

Ali and I were there too, DG.
It's not quite on the scale of the Castle Terrace one though it may expand.
It was a lovely day for a wander though, wasn't it?

Ecm, did you try that grape juice? Had to buy some. No, it's not on the scale of Castle Terrace but hope it expands in time. I'd never heard of it before we found it.

Who knows...perhaps a future idea for Porty.

Grape juice? Not at the market.

We did manage a carafe of house red at Daniel's over lunch though. Some Belgian beer at The Pond bar (great wee place) on Salamander Street and then one too many Deuchars at the Dalriada before tottering home about half an hour ago.

So a good day had by all by the sounds of it.

We were in Daniels having lunch too (although it was around 2.30pm by the time we got there). That's where we were going when we found the market.

We were in the Pond by then, DG. We were heading for the market but ended up Daniel's!

Maybe next time we'll meet in the middle - about 1.30ish?

I know Porty mentioned The Pond before on here and was impressed. It really is a lovely place. Comfy sofas, lots of interesting imported bottle beers, really nice atmosphere. If only a pub chain such as Punch could recreate such a thing it would be bliss. I think that the Pond's type of character comes from being individually owned/run though.

Yes, all in all, a great Saturday afternoon.

It's been a very long time since I've been to the Pond but agree entirely with what you've said. It's quite unique and totally relaxing. Spent some Sunday mornings there after mad night's out

. Just the place for it. Do they still have the big fish tank up the back?

Will look out for you the next time we're down at the market / Daniel's

Haven't been to "The Pond" for years now ecm. Used to live on Leith links but even then we didn't go there that much as it was fairly deserted and we had other pubs we liked more. It deserved more of our custom though and I'm glad it has survived to take advantage of all the new flats that have sprung up around that area.

Taken this morning from the side of the market.

Yes, DG, fish tank still there at the Pond and nice doggie lying about the place too!

Got chatting to one of the regulars who turned out to be from Joppa. He tipped us off to the selection of rums stocked by the Stags in Musselburgh so that could be a destination for our next Saturday jaunt.

There's a huge development being built right across the road from the Pond at present. I dare say the pub will be seeing an increase in custom once they're all occupied. Salamander Street is still a bit of a divey location though.

I'm afraid we were a little underwhelmed by the market, perhaps we were expecting a little more in the way of number of stalls and choice of products,but we hope it grows with all of our support.

I've just got to have a wee moan though - I know a lot of the craftwork and home made foods are lovingly created, usually by hand and a' that, but I wonder if these stalls actually sell anything at the prices they want. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a practicing meanie, but if you see what a veggie will pay for a vegetarian meal worth about 2 bob at cost then you'll get what I'm getting at!!!!

I always thought "street markets" were based on value for money.
I canny justify a bar of soap at a fiver!!!

Or is it just me?

Had a walk in Leith yesterday which included visiting the new market - it is definitely my style of shopping. Round every stall in only 5 minutes then off for coffee/wine. Perfect!

To claim a Jimi Hendrix album as your first album purchase is pretty cool PoP

My first purchase was one of those K-tel hit compilations

I remember it had such songs as "Love Grows (where my Rosemary goes)" by Eddison Lighthouse, "Maggie May" by Rod Stewart , "One Bad Apple" by The Osmonds and "Knock three times" by the unforgettable Tony Orlando and Dawn

Yes it would be cool but unfortunately it was not the Hendrix "Cry of Love" album I was to referring to - it was the Rod Stewart album, "Every Picture Tells a Story" in which he did a cover version of 'Angel' the song written by Hendrix.

Still it was 1971 and I was only wee!

Angel was actually on Never a Dull Moment - one of my first album purchases.
Rod Stewart made some amazing music back then. I think he's been absolutely awful for the best part of 30 years now. What a waste!

Thanks ecm - 'Never a Dull Moment' was another of my very early favourites and I have just got them mixed up - probably caused by Rod having about 200 'Greatest Hits' albums.

Not really an excuse for me getting confused though because I still play both these albums quite often. I loved the early Rod stuff and can't be believe he has gone from that to his current offerings of 3 crap albums of American Classics - what a waste as you say.

P.S. "Every Picture Tells a Story' was definitely my first album though.

Enjoyed all the opinions about Rod - have to say that the strapline was influenced by Jimi Hendrix's original - so many people don't even know he wrote it as they've only ever heard Rod's version and tend to assume it was his song.

My first single was Hendrix's Purple Haze, but my first album was Stand Up by Jethro Tull, their 2nd album, with some brilliant English blues based songs - but Hendrix will always be special.

Glad you liked the strapline!

We went to the pond today for the first time - what an amazing place. Highly recomend. Very bizarre punters - but in an interesting and unusual way!

They also have a beer garden with BBQ, was thinking we could have a talkporty BBQ, it is free with plates, BBQ, etc, just you providing the food -and drinking lots of their beer!

Didn't know the Pond had a beer garden, didn't look like that sort of place, I've passed it a few times but never gone in.
The last pub I was in, in Leith, was the Cameo and then only because it was a freebie. I dont get out much...sob...sob...

It's definitely worth going in and giving it a try, a great quirky, welcoming, relaxing old-style bar. Great selection of beer, they specialise in imported German beers and have 3 or 4 on tap.

We were enjoying

pints of Leffe Blonde (Belgian, not German, still v good) for £3.50 a pint, which is about the same as it's usually sold for in half pints "up-town".
