Talk Porty has an amazingly small number of forums. Most sites with similar number of posts will have tens of forums. A little bit of organisation is a good thing.
  • Portobello Matters: Serious Portobello related discussion
G&TT: Light hearted / non-serious Portobello discussion + general discussion
    Play Pen: Anything else

Are you working on the customer care manual?

I'm looking forward to the features that all the non-forum users want.

So, you would consider removing the play pen?
But the threads in it would go too? Wouldn't it be just as easy to reintegrate them back into g&tt or would the removal of the play pen mean that any play pen category type threads would not be allowed on g&tt in future?

It a bit more than a segregation issue. The Play Pen was a product of an atrocious moderating decision, an insult to our most regular posters. The Play Pen is now a symbol of that decision. I can't think of a better way of moving forward than moving the threads out and getting rid.

Yes, quite. I cut a few corners there. Thanks for adding so succinctly.
I'm trying to cook mince, iron, watch A Place in the Sun and post on here too. Something had to give and God forbid it should be my dinner!

I've always shared these sentiments ecm and am still a bit unhappy at the inference that regular, vocal, opinionated, informed, loud, childish and downright frivolous posters are putting new people off posting. Maybe we should have a couple of days a week when aforementioned posters are banned from posting and we'll see how many lurkers suddenly burst forth and start hundreds of new threads.

Anyway, thanks to BB, Mary, Poppy and Bearcub (and you too Wangi) for all your work in the past. I'm sure now the pressure's off you can relax and join in our 'lively' debates.
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

I think you would have to be awfully sensitive for people to put you off posting. Isn't that the whole point to have healthy debates, it would be awfully boring if we all agreed on things all of the time. It never put me off, being a relative newbie and all. I enjoy the banter.

Its a shame that people have resigned and the whole thing couldn't have been handled better but if everyone just acted with a bit more consideration then the whole thing could probably have been avoided. Its not immediately obvious to a newbie who the attack now seems to be centering on but can't we just move on?

Care to expand on this Dakota? I, for one, would be genuinely interested to hear your take on this. Without wishing to cast you as a spokesperson for the silent majority, where did it all go wrong in your opinion?

As a few of you noticed, I have also not posted for a while....

I think all our previous mods did an amazing job (well those who were not fired...lol) you all did an great job at keeping the forum pretty well together. I wish Wangi all the best for the future, you have a tough job ahead of you. I dont feel the mods caused the forum appeal factor to slip, as the same rules and regs were in place when we all used to have a good laugh, and have interresting threads, now it just seems, well empty... All the greats are still here, Porty, BB, Marya, PoP, Ecm, Ali, Poppy, Bearcub etc etc ...and i suppose even D ...but now the fun, and interesting discussion has gone, its just seems to be a load of people bitching about how a forum should be run. and that doesnt make for good reading.
I had some good times on PoL/TP I met a couple of you and had fun, I also have fond memoried, BB I will miss making your Xmas Avi's, Wwhhhhhhhweeers bob was won by TG... Well done, and the Porty pics were fun to draw esp "Belly dancer Porty"
Good luck in the future everyone!... I will still lurk every so often, and check my mail, but this is me pretty much Signing off on post 992

Peace!

It's interesting, but my forum has just gone through the same critical stage that this forum has gone through. However, I'm afraid that for me it has been relatively more devastating :( Having given it some thought now, I think that it is inevitable with these type of forums. They will ebb and flow but if there are still enough members who care about their community then they will continue to post. What annoys me more than anything are those ignorant pessimists that seem to think that the success or otherwise of a forum is down to those who administer the forum :(

The problem here was that the administrators seemed to think that the success or otherwise of the forum was down to those who administer it.

This forum will recover........... provided Wangi maintains his current light touch.
I have nothing to say and I'm going to say it.

In your opinion, and in view of what you directly see.

You really think there's nothing going on just now?

Other than a drastic drop in the number of posts to less than 100 a week. I'm not aware of anything that's going on either on or off board. I sense there is a general disenchantment but know of no collusion.

In terms of the Portobello Community and the TalkPorty stated goal of inclusion, it seems to be going according to plan.

Sometimes I find it amusing and real to compare community life here on TP with real life in Portobello. For example: in real life Portobello, with its thousands of active residents, we often bemoan the lack of on-duty Police Officers, with perhaps only two on duty on a busy Friday or Saturday evening. And yet up until recentl here on TP we had 6 Police to keep the 25 or so well-behaved regular posters in check. Crazy or what? (Particularly when you consider that the 6 were included in the 25)

Dadaist has in the past compared TP/POL to a Cafe or Bar where people meet to socialise and chat. The recent "play-pen" debacle reminds me of the following scenario:

The pub is lively with the buzz of a group of regulars, the chat is harmless but idle. All of a sudden the Manager comes over and says "I've had enough of this" then takes everybodys' drinks off them. "Your style and content puts off many people who would otherwise use this bar".

After a period of reflection the Manager thinks that perhaps his attutude has been a bit strong. So he decides to rope off an area of the bar where his regulars can sit and spraff in relative freedom. At the same time Management issues a warning that aggressive communication will not be tolerated.

When the regulars protest about their new roped-off area, Management state that they are not doing anything about it at the moment but may look at it later.

In my view TP is currently experiencing a similar level of trade to such a Bar.

(edit the atrocious idol/idle error)
