Hatstand and I turned up in the Dalriada. We didn't recognise anyone in there tho. The band were magnificent - imagine the resident house duo in a miners welfare club but they get hi-jacked by a pair of renegade cajuns from deep in the bayou and play psychedelic versions of old everley brothers tunes really loudly while Lee "Scratch" Perry mans the mixing desk. Well, that was what they sounded like. Either that or somebody had spiked the Deuchars IPA with elephant tranquiliser.
We nearly got in to a fight at the quiz machine with two english tourists, one of whom by his hairstyle was obviously a stand-in for Co-co the Clown when Coco goes on his holidays. Then there were the guys who were dressed fairly normally until you noticed they were all wearing the expensive looking hand tooled stack-heeled cowboy boots...........
We left after our second pint because we couldn't stand the weirdness anymore and we wanted to get out before the shoot-out began.
The Ormelie was jumping as usual but no less weird. There were at least 6 canines of various descriptions in there weaving around in between people's legs. Also several pipers in full regalia who looked as if they had been drinking for days and were clinging desperately to the walls in an effort to remain vertical.
The staff as usual were doing a magnificent job despite the fact that one of them couldn't speak english very well and conducted all her transactions in sign language and smiles. The Deuchars was magnificent.
Oh and Epykat and her mad mates were there too but Hatstand and I pretended we didn't know them and made a sharp exit. Honest.

I remember every word said: you have 3 mates. Ali is going for a date with each of them, one this friday, one the next and one the friday after that. He agreed that Bob and I could follow him round with a camera on each date - all of which start in the Diarrhoea and end (or will they?) in the Ormelie - then I edit the footage, we stick it on Portybelly Telly, and at the end of the 3rd week, we, the appointed representatives of Portobello, choose which of the 3 lucky ladies is to be Ali's bride, in a poll which we stick up here on G&TT (although maybe it should go on Portobello Matters, come to think of it.)Epykat wrote:You mean you don't remember agreeing to the blind date?ali wrote:Oh and Epykat and her mad mates were there too but Hatstand and I pretended we didn't know them and made a sharp exit. On the 4th Friday, they get married by Lawrence Marshall at a CC meeting, which we film, and air, along with the ensuing sex scenes, live on Portobelly Telly.
It's all agreed, and I must say I'm looking forward to it. It's quite exciting, isn't it?

New Dates for the ARMADILLOS at the Dalrida:
Sunday 12 August and Sunday 9 September are all guaranteed to have blue skies and temperatures above 30c. Take the family to Edinburgh's seaside where, in addition to the exceedingly clean water and golden sand, the Dalriada Hotel has pulled off a bit of an entertainment coup.
The Dalriada has managed to persuade Edinburgh's leading Americana band, those exiles from an Alabama trailer park, THE SCREEMIN ARMADILLOS, to play in their beer garden from 3.00 - 6.00pm.
The Dalriada Hotel is situated directly on the Prom about 2/3 of the way along towards Joppa. Sit in the beer garden or on the sea wall and listen to, laugh at/with this totally unique musical experience. You will think you're watching a re run of "Oh Brother Where Art Thou"....
Join Blind Billy-Bob, Sister Ruthie Beth, Tami-Lurleen, Dixie Dave, Roadkill Ron, Texas Frank and Choctaw Earl for afternoons of sun, beer and fun!! (Any resemblance to Council officers past or present is purely coincidental).... We are also expecting a guest appearance of the band's occasional dancin' pals the Dillettes.
Kids are very welcome, the Dalriada is a family friendly pub.Weather permitting, the band plays in the front garden facing the prom, so you can sit on the grass or in the Dalriada's deckchairs, or out on the prom wall where you can watch both the band and your kids if they're playing on the beach. Some of the most appreciative audience members when the band played there in July were the kids bouncing up and down on the Dalriada's play area! And of course, the adults loved it too....
YA'LL COME NOW YA HEAR!!
And it don't cost nuthin'
