Our cat, Poppy, had cornered a baby blackbird in our garden. I have taken the cat in and locked the cat flap, and the wee thing is hopping about in the back garden, unable to fly (I think it's too young).
Is anyone on the forum good with distressed beasties? Should I just let the cat out and let nature take it's bloody course?

If it can't fly it'll just be a matter of time before another cat or beastie gets it and rips it to bits.
Perhaps it might be kinder to go out there and whack it over the head with a shovel or something similar.

Could be. it's managing to fly a short distance at a time. I've just spoken to someone at the SSPCA, who tells me that it's a fledgeling that has probably been hopping around for a week or so, and is about to take off. I think it flew into the garden - or it may have been taken in by the cat. I'll probably take it up to Christian path - I reckon it'll have more of a chance there.

STUNNED?!?
Yeah! You stunned him, just as he was wakin' up! Blackbirds stun easily, major.
It's a classic dilemna. Does he hit it over the head with a frying pan or let the cat rip it to bits? Seriously, an unenviable choice. I'm not voting.

I know.
I was reading the Apprentice thread just before this one and the thought of that arrogant little Sugar git and those nasty, talentless idiots that perform for him made me think skulls and shovels.
I was just taking it out on the poor wee birdie.

Yeah well Sugar is just asking to be hit with a shovel, a frying pan or anything that is handy. Or ripped apart by cats possibly.

Pecked apart by so many blackbirds would be good also.

It's my German genes coming to the fore again, I'm afraid.

We had a similar dilemma when Selma brought in a starling and refused to give it up

. I got it off her eventually and took it to work with me in a shoebox. The SSPCA said they'd pick it up but despite TLC on the radiator in the office it popped it's wee claws. Shovel wasn't an option -ECM you horrible person

Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

I'm not horrible, I'm just for a short, sharp exit rather than long drawn out suffering and continued distress.

I did wodner about the shovel option, but I'm glad I didn't do it. I kept the cat in, much to it's irritation, and fed the fledgeling on a slug, banana, bread and cat food. It was perfectly happy to take the food from my hand, and even came to the cat flap making loud noises when it was hungry again. It settled down in the shrubs for the night, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't there this morning (both I and the cat had a good look). Either it has flown off, or another moggie got it.

I'm sure we will remember this next time you are looking a bit peaky. Le Creuset should do the trick.

Indeed. Look what they do to kittens: cut out their raspy wee tongues, cover them in yummy schokolade and then EAT them!! Poor wee kitties.

You'd look sad too if you had no tongue to lap your milk and clean your fur

Poppy's German kitties are very cute. It is a shame that they get dipped in chocolate and sold to tourists though.
Maybe it's got something to do with this lot.

Probably this explains why we saw
no cats
but there were lots of tame spatzen in Berlin. Will post pic later as Plug has the evidence re the birdies.

No, it was a Cologne-Berlin-Bonn tour by plane and train. The new Haupbahnhof in Berlin is incredible.
I've never been to Munich, but they probably eat cats and/or their tongues there too, I'm afraid.

She was named by our daughter, 2 at the time. Only later did we realise that we'd seen some new puppies on the same day - I think she meant to call her Puppy.
