Jock's Lodge asian food shop - amazing!
We're blessed.
*finally* a decent purveyor of all things curry and beyond
Before, the only places I knew were on Leith Walk, Polwarth and South Bridge but this place not only is closer to Porty but frankly it whups anything I've seen in town.
This place is the Pat's Chung Ying of asian stores.
It has everything and has been laid out and stacked with a love and obsession that brings a tear to my eye.
Any of youse in Register House will know where it is - just along from Jock's Lodge pub, in the premises that used to be a restaurant.
There's a *pile* of products I'd never seen before.
I bought - uncooked garlic poppadoms, mango custard powder, hot bombay mix and some garlic & ginger paste (they have the usual Patak's range)
They have loads of different kinds of pickle. Weird juices, waters, oils and essences. I've never seen such a selection of sesame oil.
Everything is well cheap - if you're into comb honey you're in for a treat.
In the fresh bit there's 3 big bunches of coriander for £1, and even fresh methi leaves.
When I was there, someone came in with a list of curry ingredients and they happily dug them all out from the shelves.
Long may they stay. I didn't even know you could buy chewing tobacco (not that I want any) but it was interesting to see it. It's in the things-you-chew-after-dinner section (you know, like those sugar-coated seeds you get in some restaurants).
I just made half a pint of the mango custard and it's lovely. Neo Dadaist #1 helped me with it whilst Mrs Dadaist made faces.
