Metro newspaper this morning had a great place Bijou at Leith Links reviewed - owner used to work at Blue Cafe Bar at Traverse. This is the sort of neighbourhood place I want - good food and drink at decent prices. Select and Reds and Dalrida are just too expensive for out of town.

There must be room for both which would be great.

Has anyone been to St Andrews Restaurant recently (I don't mean for a chippy!!)?

PS Saw that review too Sandra - sounds VG!!

Have you tried Select recently? Apparently they have trimmed their prices and are much busier as a result. And, where is Bijou exactly?

not lately, though have noticed they have been busier. Also noticed they had a new sign outside shop, just after Reds put out their blackboard

Thought Select's valentines menu was reasonably priced, was it any good DG?

Noticed they'd been busier recently. Glad they are, as the food has always been good when I've eaten there, only niggle recently was the prices creeping up to that imaginary "this is a bit expensive for what it is" line.

Did notice that the Valentine's 3-course menu was only £16.95, which I thought was pretty reasonable for a meal on "that" night.

Mr Sizzler told me he had been planning his 'A' board for a while to advertise that he is now open for coffee & pastries in the morning and afternoon and introduced a 'Pre-Theatre' menu between 5pm-6pm.

The Pre-Theatre menu will operate on the same basis as the lunch menu i.e. you can buy 1,2 or 3 courses from a set menu. A brill idea for taking the kids out for tea! 8)

I just hope for Mr Sizzler that open-all-day restaurant -especially at his end of the High Street - is sustainable as opposed to only opening in the evenings. I have my doubts.

He was open at least at lunchtime before this - not just in the evening.

Tried to goto Reds again on Monday night to celebrate a birthday/new job combo. It's closed on Mondays!! Twice we've tried to go now and failed.

Hopped on the bus to Musselburgh and went to the Glass House instead. Absolutely fantastic restaurant. Highly reccomended.

We'll just go there from now on if we fancy a meal out without heading into Edinburgh.

Yes - I've been there with both my kids and really enjoyed it. They're both late 20's and they eat out regularly and they rate it highly. The menu is interesting and varied and I would recommend it. They also have a small room for private parties (for about 12 - 14?) which could be useful for small groups. It's about 100 yards from the Brunton Theatre and 200 yards from Fisherrow Harbour so it's the right side for Porty.

I've been for lunch and it was really nice. We got the 'private room' because it was a 40th and really enjoyed it.
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

Have been to a couple of weddings there! The conservatory is the airiest and has views of the gardens and peacocks (during daylight hours!). The C ock* & Bull is full of interesting 'things' like Canny Man's but a bit gloomy, perhaps? Depends if you don't mind eating where others are boozing. Not sure about the Dirty Dick's bit. Looks good - it's off the Bar. I'd say it depends on the person your taking (age/taste etc) and the time of day.

* Had to circumvent to profanity filter for that name!!

I though the conservatory looked the best so im just gonna go for that!!!

A really good restaurant that i would recommend is Sabor Criollo. It is a small Latin American restaurant in Stockbridge. I think it is a family run restaurant and always has a great atmosphere! The food is very tasty and reasonably priced. They have a starter of fried cassava :tongue8: which is just amazing and not something that i have had in another restaurant here.

I was in Reds a couple of weeks back, lovely soup and great nachos but when we were there a couple came in for coffee and were turned away because they were a restaurant at the weekends and didn't do coffee only. We were the only ones in the place at that point! It was also noted that for a child-friendly place, plenty of expetives were being used by the staff, something along the lines of " I need to go out for a f***ing fag." Hmm.

Seems the menu has been changed to "bistro" style and they have a new chef. They are never busy in the evenings. Silly turning people away.

Hardly appropriate for a service industry at all - even if there was 5 mile child exclusion zone!!

And the cook (I think) having a fag outside the front door as I saw last week is not a good look
