computer flu sympathy thread

Post by SoupDragon » 27 Feb 2007, 15:02

Our main computer was hit by a trojan virus last week.
It wasn't attached to an email but was caught by our AVG when we started up in the morning. No idea where it came from, not sure if it was there the day before and caught by the AVG update
The nasty wee thing couldn't be locked in the virus vault or deleted.
It switched off the restart points, it switched off all security centres etc etc. It also blocked Microsoft "recovery" pages.
Luckily it didn't get as far as the laptops ? the Linksys firewall.
After much swearing and work( on his last days holiday) Mr Soupy went through the boot up and deleted the infected lines. He also uninstalled and reinstalled virus controls
I put a nice healing crystal on it

I'm using the laptop until we reinstall Windows in the main comp. Deleting the infected stuff made it run really slow

I had one a while ago that was masquerading as a spyware remover and pretending to be very helpful. It even helpfully disabled my task manager so that I couldn't kill it while it searched through my files  Eventually I switched off the PC, booted into safe mode and several virus scans later I managed to restore order.

I had something similar and couldn't get rid. Took it to that bloke in PH Street and he sorted it.

Oh wish Icould get hold of whoever wrote the virus we had.
Still running slow, will be a few days before Mr Soupy can get time to work on the pc.
I thought we were ok with AVG updating everyday, just shows. Be vigilant folks!
Not sure if the virus had sneaked in the previous day when one of the Clangers was surfing or if it came sneaking in when I started up the pc that morning.
Had a couple of alerts since when going onto Virgin's homepage

Might be a bit late for advice, but [these] guys are really good at providing help in times of virus/mal/spyware attacks.

Their forums are well manned and if you provide them with a hijackthis! log then they will offer you free sensible help!

Thanks IV I'll point the link out to Mr Soupy.
The virus wouldn't let us acess any site that might get rid of it ie Microsofts malicious download tool etc.
We did have new AVG and Spybot on. The AVgGcaught it but couldn't healor delete it

The crystal seems to help.

Have offered the pc some soup
