Grrrrr!!!

Post by Cleopas » 28 Nov 2006, 14:43

4 minutes ago, water started pouring down the walls (the freshly painted walls!!! ) of my flat in the living room and in the hall. I've phoned the concierge ... and as yet no-one has shown up. It's actually FLOWING!!!

How long will I wait for a worker to sort it out?? Place your bets NOW!!!

Will I qualify for compo?? Place your bets NOW!!!

Grrrrrrr!

What a rotten way to end November, and in a lovely fresh flat too! Hope things are at least mostly sorted by this evening so you don't have to worry about wading tomorrow.

Had a very similar incident a few months back.
Mine was at about 11.30pm at night though :|

Went upstairs and knocked on the door - no answer, so I went up the road to the police station and got them to come and open the door for me. They managed to press the door open without breaking the lock - impressive and made me realise that double locking the door was indeed a good thing to do! When they got inside, the found that the occupant had a shower head sitting in a bucket on the bathroom floor and this had been very slowly filling up and was now spilling out. I have no idea why someone would do this rather than just leave the shower head in the bath (like any normal person would). Police popped a note through their door but the person never bothered coming down stairs to apologise or offer to pay for any damage.

Luckily there wasn't any damage done, although the person upstairs wasn't to know that.

The joys of water! One of my upstairs neighbours is supposed to keep her roof garden drains clear because when she doesn't the water overflows and drains down through my ceiling lights! After the last big rain only half of those lights are still working..

Sorry ... nephew's been here for tea and getting course books I promised for his Uni course. Yap yap yapped for about 5 hours, since I coached him in a few exams and he got top marks in his year! :D :D

Anyway ... plumber arrived 1 hour and 3 minutes after phone call. I had moved carpets and protected wall heaters with towels very quickly. Fortunately, no real damage except a little bubbling of wallpaper and streaks where the white paint is. All completely recoverable with a little judicious DIY. I'm fairly good at it. It's electrical things I fall apart with!

Turns out flat above's washing machine door sprung open and the water cascaded out. The people (2 Spanish guys) were really sorry ... but their mess was way worse than mine. I felt sorry for them and commiserated.

All okay (for me now). Thanks for the concern ... but no need for insurance or compo, thankfully. *whew!!! :?

Glad you didn't have too much damage from the water, lucky that you're handy with a paintbrush etc. It could've been so much worse, I would've been in a right panic!!!
Washing machines have a lot to answer for!!!

So true, Arachnid. We had similar problem to Cleopas not much damage but left a nasty mark on the ceiling which defied attempts to paint over it until I discovered that you can get a wee can of stuff that goes on like paint but stops the watermark showing through. So paint it on, let it dry then paint over. I can't remember what it's called though.

Sympathies anyway, Cleopas

I have a cousin who's a painter and decorator. I offered to pay him to do all the work when I was moving in, but he turned me down because he's "snowed under with so much work". I just wished a pox on his house in return!

So ... although I can sort it out myself, I think my voodoo has rebounded on me!

I'll be watching out for that kind of thing in future! :?

I had the same problem just under 2 years ago. Came back from work on a Monday night to find a soaked carpet and water coming through my bedroom ceiling. Was a washing machine in the flat above - he had to get his whole kitchen replaced because of the water.

Luckily got it all repaired and a new carpet on insurance. Just splashed some paint around (bright orange - lovely) and the room looks great now. Much better then the mint green horror it was when I moved in. Was a bit of hassle at the time, but looking back on it I'm really glad it happened - gave me a kick up the behind to do the painting and gave me a nice new room.

I returned from work one day to be met at the front door by a strange aroma. I spent a few hours sniffing at toilets, behind sofas etc., only to discover much later on in the evening that the street sewage pipe had burst and its contents were running down my basement walls!!!

To make matters worse, we had to pay for the pipe to be replaced as the broken pipe lay in our garden.

arrgghhhhh nightmare

In my old flat my washing machine leaked to the downstairs flat. The girl who lived there was fine about it but her dad was livid. Anyway, my insurance paid for her redecoration compete with extras - new border and new carpet
