Its only about 20 months old but the Portobello Matters forum is about to reach a landmark 5000 posts. The PM forum ought to be the envy of ANY community that desires a web presence.
PM is incredibly useful, consider the speed at which information becomes available, like in NW MAsterplan and of course the school's debate. The accesibility is second to none. It is useful for campaigning and for keeping the information that circulates "real".
I can't quite recall how PM came about? but I think it was down to pressure from the Community Council to seperate the wheat from the chaff in relation to the topics. It has been a great success and long may it continue.

Its my trademark. The man is a phenomenon. I think we should nominate him for a honour and I am not kidding. His service to Portobello is tremendous. I think it is fair to say that there were a lot of unbelievers in the early days. It was certainly nothing to do with the CC. I just felt at the time that it made sense to separate the serious local issues from general discussion. That doesn't devalue the 'Portobello Online' forum in any way. I enjoy the gossip and tittle tattle, the photos, the quizzes and everything else, and it's worth remembering that it hosts serious discussion as well. For example, if you want to discuss Iraq then it wouldn't be appropriate on PM. And, conversely, although we like to encourage serious discussion on PM, it has its lighter moments as well.
I've often said that forum members are the best informed people in Portobello, and that certainly is the case. Portobello Matters is a great way to share and distribute local news and information. It's also a great way to debate and express opinion on local issues. We don't always agree, and moderation can be challenging at times, but we all care passionately.
Not everyone understands or appreciates what we are doing. Indeed, according to some, we are 'poisoning the community'. That's not the way I see it.

I like to add a wee thanks from those of use who are at a distance. I feel that I am fully informed of all aspects of what's going on back home (including who is stirring the poison and who is drinking it

I have lost count of the times I've heard "if only POL were different more people might post". It incenses me.
