Building & road works

Not a complaint - just an observation on the enormous amount of work that has gone on just within one tenement block of where I work - in the Hillside/Brunswick/Montgomery area.

Over the last year, anything and everything that can be torn up, blasted, painted, built, re-built, extended, re-zoned or renovated has been!

We have had :

* tenement sand blasting & stoneworks

* ground floor flats having new flats built underneath

* gaps between tenements filled with new properties

* offices converted into flats

* speed bumps

* traffic zoning - permit holders only - meaning all the old paintwork was blasted off and the ticket machines put in place

* new water mains

* tenement roofs being re-done

The amount of work done and all the costs and materials involved don't even bear thinking about.

This is all within one tenement block. This city seems to need a heck of a lot of maintenance!

Re maintenance: you'll need that much maintenance when you get to that age too, D!?

I'm hoping they'll have invented a bunch of cool stuff by then to act as replacements when bits of me start falling off.

There must be a huge industry in carved funny replacement bits of sandstone - although you do see some of them being made on-site by stonemasons.

I chat to a friend in Russia who finds our architecture fascinating - as well as industries which simply don't exist over there - like "Architectural Salvage" - everyone wants everything brand new - can't say I blame them!

It's fascinating how "common" building materials vary over the planet depending on what's local - from wood to stone and marble.

Montgomery Street is "no parking" again - because they are having to re-paint all the permit-holder lines again (substandard or incorrect markings) - meaning that they are currently towing away permit holders!

Imagine how miffed you'd be if you lived there, duly applied for and displayed your badge, and got towed anyway because the contractor boo-boo'd the paint. Oops!

Louise Batchelor-Reporting and her cameraman were down there just now - so it might be on tonight - don't know which side she's on?

My folks live right beside where that photo was taken (next to the dentist?) and my father is in that situation where he has been forced to buy a permit to park outside his own home, and now can't even park there!! I presume that they will let the current permit run for 13 months to compensate ?

This dude got towed - even though he had a permit !!!

Red herring...it was an article about recycling...just been on Reporting Scotland
