Maths Quiz

Post by Bob Jefferson » 07 Sep 2006, 13:07

My son was recently given a maths quiz. It is intended for S1 and S2 kids. Would you like to give it a go?

Please do not post your answers here, but pm me instead. The pupils have to complete the paper unaided so we don't want to give the game away, assuming any of you get the right answers. I think I have solutions to the first four problems but I'm still struggling with the fifth.

I will award 20 points for each problem. Ten points will be awarded for the correct answer and a maximum of 10 points for the intelligence and elegance of your explanation.

The quiz can be found here.

You have exactly one week starting NOW!

Let me try a different angle. Cleopas, you have to get to the square root of this problem you have with maths. Even if does seem odd, this is a prime opportunity for a whole number of reasons.

Sorry ... my brain went numb just reading the questions and I zoned out.

I never got above fractions at school. I know Ancient Greek better than Geometry and Algebra is an Arabic word, while Logarithms makes me laugh cos I don't know if it's a word for when you go to the loo, or some method for s***al int**course.

And I noticed you had several digs at me in your post!!!

Excuse me while I just go and hang my innumerate self in my empty living room now!

Scarier still when you remember the age group they are aimed at. But I have high hopes for you. I'm sure I heard you were great with figures. Or was it that you have a great figure?

Oh dear, that's unfortunate. Hopefully it's just a temporary blip and it will be back up soon. Failing that I will scan it in myself.

Well I got the answer(I think) to the horse one when I looked earlier but I'm also now getting the "page not available" message so can't do any more. Shame .

Looks like you got a whole lot more like me absolutely cr*p at maths on the board, Bob. What price it'll be completed? Oh yeah ... can't count! :(

Anyone who has ever moved house and had to box, bag, roll up, toss out, remember to keep, organise vans, people, utilities and services, and spend the last night (tonight) sleeping on the couch surrounded by said boxes, bags, the assorted unboxable and unbaggable (suddenly remembering to defrost the fridge/freezer), will know exactly what moving house is like.

I want to SCREEEEAAAAAAMMMM ... and maybe kill somebody if they even LOOK at me the wrong way with a throw of the ancestral assegai! Yeah ... a disembowelling of someone I really dislike would calm me down no end! But, I'm a pussycat and there's no-one to do that to! :(

I'll hopefully be back online on Monday if Telewest don't screw up ... screwing up from workmen is an absolute given when you move!

Stress?? Me??? Naaah!!! Maybe I should look at the Maths paper again and see that housemoving is a doddle compared to schoolwork! :D :D

Olympiad?

These questions look suspiciously like the early round ones for the Mathematical Olympiad. Explains why they are hard

I've got Mr. Mamba working on it as I write. Did Mr. Arachnid have a go?

Plug was flummoxed by (at least) one - even though he's got that sort of mathematical brain.

Whereas my brain just switches off when I see numbers!!

Printed the questions out for him so he could take his time to study them, but not a question answered, and he's supposed to be the " brainy" one in the family!!!!

Time's up. Well done to anyone who even attempted this very tricky quiz. As mentioned, we don't have the official answers until next month but I think we have managed to work them out between us. I eventually managed 3 out of 5. I wasn't the only person to get the problem with the die wrong - the answer isn't the obvious one and I just can't get my head around the final problem involving the wheels. Although 2 people provided the correct answer to this, no-one has provided what I would consider a mathematical proof.

Congratulations and full marks to kipling, who provided the correct answers to all 5 problems along with excellent explanations. If you would like to see the solutions I will be happy to pm you kipling's entry.

And it's back to school for the rest of us!
