London Rd - Portobello Rd... All The Names?

Post by wangi » 20 Aug 2004, 11:04

So, is this the one road in Edinburgh with the most names? Off the top of my head I can remember sections of it called: Leopold Place, Brunton Terrace, Parsons Green Terrace, Piershill Something and Moira Terrace. What are the others?

Next time I'm going along there on the bus, I'll count 'em. And I'll keep my eye out for other candidates ............

Isn't one of the bits Wolseley Terrace? Or have I made that up?

Earlston Place (at Abbeyhill), Dalziel Place (a bit further on from Earlston Pl. heading east and if you're counting Moira Terrace as part of london Rd, Inchview Terrace.

And the wee block with the Golden Gates pub on it is Meadowbank Place.

You need to think outside of the box and think about moving away from porty (the place) towards musselburgh you will pick a few more up there.

Honestly, the things I do... I walked to work today (east end of Portobello High Street to west end of Queen Street) and counted all the minor street names on Portobello Road and London Road. They are (in order):
* Inchview Terrace
* Moira Terrace
* Piersfield Terrace
* Piershill Place
* Wolseley Terrace
* Jock's Lodge
* Wolseley Place
* Hillend Place
* Parson's Green Terrace
* Meadowbank Place
* Dalziel Place
* Earlston Place
* Cadzow Place
* East Norton Place
* Brunton Place
* Leopold Place.
Apologies if I missed any out.

Things get really silly at Smokey Brae, where opposite sides of the road have different names.

Incidentally, it works out at approximately six and a half street names per mile - surely some kind of record.

Doing all this meant I was a lot later getting into work than I intended, but at least I've done my 10,000 steps. That means I can have a sweet sherry this evening with a clear conscience.

Okay, using the interactive map on the Ed cooncil planning portal...
  • London Road
    Leopold Place
    (excluding Hillside Crescent)
    Brunton Place
    East Norton Place
    Cadzow Place
    Earlston Place
    (excluding Lower London Road)
    Dalziel Place
    Meadowbank Place
    Parsons Green Terrace
    Hillend Place
    Wolseley Place
    Jocks Lodge
    Wolseley Terrace
    Portobello Road
    Piershill Place
    Piersfield Terrace
    Moira Terrace
    Inchview Terrace
    King's Road (why stop at Seafield...)
Not bad...

EDIT: Of course, would have been better If I'd noticed Alex's post! Doh...
