Porty Beach Blockades

Post by rapunzell » 12 Jun 2006, 23:13

Well, it has been EIGHT MONTHS since I began phoning the council about those beach blocks. At first the Clarence dept was astonished that there were wheelchairs in Porty, then equally amazed that anyone would want to get onto the beach in one, and from then it veered between assurances that the blocks would be gone by spring, and more astonishment to hear that they were actually still in place, but always that someone would investigate and get back to me immediately. They never have, not even once in all eight months of trying to make progress. The only contact came from Lawrence Marshall who kindly emailed the council on my behalf, but then it all went quiet.

The June update is that I called Clarence again to mention that the blockade is still in place at the bottom of Bath Street, and they said it was the first they'd heard of it, but guess what - someone would get back to me! I don't want to hear any more about ramps being open for wheelchairs elsewhere along the beach, or that the blocks will be removed when the sun comes out, or that the entire beachful of sand will vanish up Bath Street if disabled access is reinstated, or that they've never heard of such a thing as a *gate*.. They won't even give me the name of the person in charge, as though they are immune from responsibility and repercussions.

*edit* If they've moved/ are moving the blocks since I last spoke to them, I'd still like to know which (named) person is responsible - for getting answers now and for next time..
