Yes, as it's an emergency you can use this option without losing your credibility, although I think dc might be prepared to do your shopping for you to avoid this scenario.

I had no hot water over Christmas and New Year but fortunately still have an old immersion heater in the house which worked a treat.

My friendly plumber came out yesterday and sorted it in 10 minutes and charged me Â£60

I asked him if I needed a new boiler but he says these old ones are virtually indestructable. They apparently take Honeywell parts which are still available so his advice.... do nothing

OK I've calmed down a bit now. To give Homer some credit, the reason I'm doing all the running around is because he's at work and I'm still on holiday. He's only had 3 days off in the last fortnight so he's feeling very hard done by, poor soul.

I re-scheduled the call out, shut down the boiler and went out to source food and copious quantities of drink (you can tell I was one of Charles Kennedy's pals in my youth can't you?

). Got back to find a card from the Gas engineer.

The next exciting installment will follow on Monday. Betchya can't wait, eh?

We got our conventional boiler replaced with another new conventional boiler a few years back!

Although not as economical as the combi boilers, if the water goes off for some reason or there's a power cut, we still at least have hot water to last us for a wee while!

For the record we've had a Vokera combi boiler for almost seven years. It's broken down, on average, twice a year, every year since it was put in. I hate it. We had a Potterton Myson conventional boiler in Marlborough Street for ten years with no problems (Dada, you can take over from here

All went well thanks Sandra. The engineer replaced another sensor today and my boiler seems nice and healthy once more. *touch wood*
Fortunately, it held up fine over the weekend and though my father in law kept on wanting to go home, I don't think it was because of lack of food or heat, but more to do with his increasing years. It is quite a scary thing to witness how frail and wandering he's become in the last 2 years. It must be even more frightening for my mother in law to witness- at 85 she is only 4 years younger than her husband but she's still as mentally capable as ever (nothing much escapes her

).

Well Sandra, my computer table must be made of MDF as I'm without my boiler today

*technical bit now follows* The pressure has plummeted to under half a bar, it's switched itself off and I've no way of topping it up as the engineer sealed off the water intake yesterday. He's also too busy to come out today and according to the girl in their office my boiler problems aren't doing their profits much good as they charge a flat call out/labour charge, so that's a shame isn't it?

The only good thing is that I don't have to do any washing up as there's no hot water.

Maybe he should have thought of that and fixed it properly on his first visit

Talking of boilers, plumbers etc (and I'm sure there must be a thread somewhere but I'm too lazy to look) can anyone recommend a plumber who won't mind just doing some little jobs like putting a radiator in the utility room, cutting and capping some pipes etc???

Please help me. Otherwise Mrs Priest is going to kill me. I was supposed to have sorted this out ages ago.
