Misleading News Articles

There is an article in today's Scotsman about local shops being forced to close by superstores &c. And what have they chosen to illustrate it with - a montage of SUCCESSFUL Portobello shops. IMHO this is very misleading and shoddy and potentially harmful. Luckily they have erased the shop names from the photos, but even so I am not amused.

If you look at the online version it clearly shows Williamson's, defnitely not erased!!!

The photos arguably prove their point, in that they were struggling to find somewhere with a thriving baker, butcher, grocer and fishmonger all close to each other!

They could have just taken a picture of the high street and mentioned how we fought off Tesco.

It's a weird montage, Poppy is right. It's extremely crude and most of the picture is taken up with the chemist's shop.

I guess they aren't expecting most people to pay that much attention to the picture, and wanted something which represents "The High Street" the same way that an article about currency talks about "The Pound" - it doesn't matter which one you take a picture of?

I would have made a montage of destitution, featuring all the shops that time forgot, and a bunch of confused bohemians clutching Tesco Finest boxes.

Apparently there are only 12 butchers still trading in Edinburgh, someone told me this and I have tried using my heid to disprove it. Here's how far I got:

Findlays
The one at Joppa.
Crombies.
The one in stockbridge..................help!!!

that weird one in Corstorphine that makes Boer sausages.

the one half way down Leith Walk (next to storries) that has a weird opening in its window for hot rolls

there's one in Musselburgh with a weird refrigerated trolley they push outside in the summer and fill up with pink sausagemeat

the one down Easter Road with lots of weird packets of lentils and soup mix

the one opposite Meadowbank stadium's footie pitches which recently, and weirdly, removed all its shopfront fridges and put up big signs saying they still do orders, or something. POLers who work at Jock's Lodge will know the one I mean

Trust you to go off on a tangent. Musselburgh butchers don't count.

It does amaze me how succesful Musselburgh is as a retail location. And they have a Tesco right on the end of their high street.

Didn't need the Yellow Pages to find out that name - years of walking down the Walk past "Chop Chop, the Butcher's Shop" has imprinted it...

Leith Walk has many many lovely shops and I have many many lovely memories associated with them, including my first ever job stacking shelves.

I don't think it's called that any more, but while I haven't seen anyone in the shop for a while, someone must still be paying their electric cos there's some well bright bulbs on.

A national grid ref to where - here?
