My curiosity finally got the better of me and I eventually asked the Manager of the Ormelie what was happening.

Essentially it is spring water that is coming out of a dis-used mine shaft that runs under the buildings. The Coal Board Engineers have been extremely helpful but the water has got to come out somewhere. They have managed to seal off the adjoining houses but unfortunately they cannot do anything with the flooded Ormelie Cellar except for redirecting the water outside into the drainage system. The pipe is there for ever so I suggested he should just start selling Original Ormelie Spring Water!

I remember a few years back when the whole back lane became flooded for a few weeks,no doubt from the same source.

Trivia for the evening - what was the name of the Ormelie before it was the Ormelie? Don't ask me the answer tonight - a pensioner recently told me and his memory is obviously better than mine
