Cafe at the top of King's Road/ Seafield Road East
I live in the flat that used to be the cafe/ tearoom here. The only name on the title deeds is Franchi, and I'm surmising that they were the last to run the cafe, but old photos show that it was around in the early 1900s. Does anyone have any more info about it ? I've managed to find out that the basement of the former Braid the Butcher, which is next door, was a boxing club, but don't know anything about our own place It's sheer nosiness and curiosity to know whose tearoom I'm now sleeping in !! Thanks a lot - really hope there are some replies !

The Clarkes that owned the PO, owned the house I now live in!Pal of Porty wrote:I spent the first 10 years of my life living in Kings Road but I can only remember the Co-op, which is now a blind shop, Braids the Butcher and Clarkes the Post Office/Newsagent just a few shops along. It was after all, quite a long time ago...................
Hope it wasn't one of them, who paid me a spooky visit on Saturday night?
No one else in the house, I was sitting at the computer - in conservatory, foxy wrote:OOOOOHHHHHH...do tell GeminiGemini wrote: The Clarkes that owned the PO, owned the house I now live in!

frosted glass window between here and kitchen, I thought I heard a
noise - thought it was my son (remembered he had went out) dogs ears
pricked up, saw a dark slim shadow pass the window? it didn't enter
the cons. and did not return back past the window?
Something similar happend a few years back, 3am, sitting in kitchen
writing xams cards - looked up - same window (not frosted at that time)
a white 'something' passed across the conservatrory! and dissapeared.
This 'something' looked as though it came through the door - which had been bricked off a few years earlier.
Anyone else had any eerie experiences like this?

Promqueen, had quick look at work and it looks like your house was a rented double shop until 1948 when the Franchis bought both as one shop; don't know what it was between 1971 and 1973 when it was sold to a plumber until 1987 which appears to be when it was converted into a house - if not then, it was by 1991.
dont think so - I have lived here since 1984.Poppy wrote:Promqueen, had quick look at work and it looks like your house was a rented double shop until 1948 when the Franchis bought both as one shop; don't know what it was between 1971 and 1973 when it was sold to a plumber until 1987 which appears to be when it was converted into a house - if not then, it was by 1991.
Unless of course, my neighbour was wrong about the Clarkes living here?
cafe
Wonder if we're talking about the same place, Gemini - This is a stair next to the Blind Shop, neighbouring Braid the butcher as was, and a few doors away from what's still the post office on Seafield Road East... had a wee look out the back window, and don't see a conservatory anywhere !

Ha ha ha - no I don't live on Seafield Road East, promqueen wrote:Wonder if we're talking about the same place, Gemini - This is a stair next to the Blind Shop, neighbouring Braid the butcher as was, and a few doors away from what's still the post office on Seafield Road East... had a wee look out the back window, and don't see a conservatory anywhere !
but when POP wrote about the Clarkes, running the PO there - a few years ago, I remembered a neighbour telling me they previously owned the house I now own, in B Road.
Cafe Seafield Rd near Kings Rd
A friend who often visited the cafe for ice-cream etc. says it was a lovely place with the counter on the left on entering and the room to the right containing the tables and chairs for sit-in customers. The two ladies who owned it were both Miss Franchi - one called Julia. The cafe was closed when one of the ladies died - approximately mid 60s my friend thinks.

The other was Marguaretta who died around 1951. Julia sold the premises in 1971 - but it could be that she leased the premises after M's death until then. They lived at No 1 Seafield Road East.Spree wrote:A friend who often visited the cafe for ice-cream etc. says it was a lovely place with the counter on the left on entering and the room to the right containing the tables and chairs for sit-in customers.
