Xmas gift suggestion

Portobello and Duddingston
By
Margaret Munro and Archie Foley
(ISBN 0 7524 3657 0 Tempus Publishing Ltd.)

Image
Tempus Publishing is the largest publisher of local history works in Great Britain and this new publication is in the highly successful Images of Scotland series of old photograph books.

The images selected give a glimpse into the diversity of Portobello and Duddingston and reflect the importance of both the tourist trade and of industry such as pottery. Other themes are also explored, paying particular attention to the people and places who have shaped the history of theses independently minded communities.

Both authors are qualified historians and have been active in the local history of the area for many years. Margaret Munro recently succeeded Archie Foley as Secretary of Portobello History Society.

With over 200 illustrations and 14,000 words of text, this will make an ideal Christmas present at only £12.99. Copies are on sale at Portobello Stationers, 110, Portobello High Street.

The initial Launch and Signing is on Wednesday 23 November in the Dalriada Bar/Restaurant, 77 Promenade to which all are welcome. (Check our What's On section for details of other local launch dates)

thanks Bob, I'll probably buy a couple :) don't think I'll manage to the launch though.

Wish there was a calendar this year though.

Good suggestion, thanks Bob.

However, for friends and family who have no connection with Portobello, what about http://www.oxfamunwrapped.com/

We've decided this year at work, instead of doing a Christmas dip when we end up with thoughtful but usually useless gifts, we are going to put the money together and buy a donkey from Oxfam. I think this is a great idea.

I got a goat last year from my boys, from CAFOD. They (the boys) were a bit puzzled by the whole thing - me asking for a present I didn't actually get - but I was very happy with it. And friends have requested OXFAM gifts this year too. I've asked people close to me to donate a pint of blood instead of buying me some useless tat.
All I really need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt!

I'm wondering why they bothered with Duddingston. A very interesting book!

Bought my Dad this book for Xmas - it was amazing and he really brought it alive. He was going through the book telling me stories about some of the individuals in the photos and what they are up to today, which was ususally still playing bowling at Lee Crescent or dead!
