Radio Free Porty lives through Last FM

Post by AmericanaOK » 21 Oct 2005, 20:35

As good as the legal RFP output is there are some who want to share their music with their virtual friends. LastFM seems to enable this without attracting the PRS Police. To see an example click on this link http://www.last.fm/user/AmericanaUK/. What I propose is that all the RFP DJs set up an account (it's free) on Last FM http://www.last.fm/. Our leader can then create a link from each DJ's index page that will take the listener to LastFM where they can sample the musical delights of the selected DJs. Additionally I've created a discussion group on LastFM called Radio Free Porty to enable discussion, sharing of ideas etc. When you create your LastFM account you can enter personal details including your home page which I propose would be http://www.radiofreeporty.org/ thereby squaring the circle! Hope this all makes sense, if not ask. Long live Radio Free Porty. 8)

This is an excellent idea which complements RFPs output.

I knew that AOK had his last.fm page but I had no idea that it was a free personal radio station!

It takes a while for their custom player (which you have to download) to learn your tastes (when it plays you a duff track you click that you don't like it, when it plays one you'd like more of you click you like it) but then the real power of their system kicks in and it becomes more specific.

It also shows you other people's tastes which are similar to yours.

During the period where RFP can't play licensed music this is a great way of sharing our DJs mainstream tastes - thanks AOK just stop calling me a leader!!

Heh. My last.fm username is dadaist303, but I'm not showing up any stats yet as I have only listened to 30 tracks.

Seeing as you insist on calling me boss, AOK, here's a suggestion - I will put each DJ's last.fm link on their index page at the RFP site. This means that you must have submitted legal/local/unsigned tracks to the RFP playlist in order to get your last.fm link. Fair?

I dread to think what Roger Twongle's music taste is. Bavarian parlour music probably, or Zydeco.

And what's wrong with Zydeco?
I'm looking forward to watching the DVD of 'The Big Easy' again. Homer bought it for me as a birthday present. Great music, great film and New Orleans before Katrina. 8)

I'm not really much of a music fan mate, but I do have a soft spot for Huey Lewis & The News.

As we speak I am working on a programme of Cajun and Zydeco called Rathbone's Cajun Corner.

With any luck it should be with you early next week.
I have nothing to say and I'm going to say it.

That's a blast from the past! I'd completely forgotten about them.

I remember some great nights with the Deaf Heights Cajun Aces at the Venue and the Assembly Rooms. What a great band they were!!!
A couple of years ago ecm and I were hunting for bargains in a second hand record shop in Morrrison Street which was holding a closing down sale and I found a cd by them called "heart songs". Tracks 1-7 are original songs and 8-16 are the cajun songs which formed the majority of their live set including Colinda, Laccasine Special and Two Step de Grand Mallet. I always wondered what the story of the band was - they seemed to emerge fully formed as an authentic cajun band at a time when the music was still a minority interest. Robust stuff!!!

PS I believe Deaf Heights is the name of a hill near Soutra to the south of Edinburgh.

Seems fair to me - A bit of an incentive never did any harm - I'm waiting on tunes from a local band which will kick things off for me. In the mean time I look forward to seeing the DJs LastFM selections 8)

Cool. When I play Battlefield 2 online tonight I will have last.fm on my headphones - the perfect soundtrack as I try to get my sniper medal.
