PoP and I stayed on the scene, observing all that was going on. Poor Agnes a deli regular got injured and a huge fright no doubt.
As usual there was a funny side: part of the debris was a poster that stated something like "Take the Bus and avoid the traffic" also dcCairns came strolling along the high street and failed to even notice.

Elderly woman in hospital after bus crashes into shelter
AN elderly woman was taken to hospital with leg injuries today after a double-decker crashed into the bus shelter where she was standing.
The woman, thought to be in her 70s, was left sprawled on the ground after the collision in Portobello High Street at around 9.30am. A second woman, aged in her mid-20s, suffered a cut leg. The accident happened when a No.12 Lothian bus travelling west from the Jewel to the Gyle Centre clipped the side of the shelter roof as it stopped.
The shelter crumpled under the impact and shattered glass over the two women. George Gare, 49, whose barbers shop is next to the shelter, heard the smash and rushed outside.
"I saw an elderly woman lying on the ground," he said. "I think she had been standing on the right of the shelter where the bus hit it.
"She had cuts to both of her legs. Her knees were bleeding profusely and she was obviously in shock."
Lana Hillhouse, a travel agent at the Thomsons shop opposite the shelter, said: "Another bus hit the shelter about two weeks ago, although this was worse. It's obviously badly designed."
George McKendrick, Lothian Buses operations manager, said there were four passengers on the bus. He added: "We are currently carrying out an investigation both internally and with the help of Lothian and Borders Police."
A police spokeswoman said: "The shelter was left near collapse. We believe it's going to be taken down as it's unsafe."

I was actually on the 26 which was standing loading passengers at the stop just in front of the 12. There was a terrific bang and the sound of breaking glass. When I turned round to see what was happening the elderly woman was on the ground and the younger woman was leaning over her. Several people had been standing next to the bus shelter and had obviously jumped out of the way as the bus hit. It didn't appear as if the bus had mounted the pavement and it wasn't in contact with the shelter which was leaning over at an angle although the driver may have reversed a little after contact - I don't know. He looked pretty shocked.
Anyway I didn't see much else because the driver of the 26 didn't even get out of his cab to see what was happening but pulled away and continued on his way - got to keep to the timetable!!!!!
We were half way up Portobello Road when the ambulance passed.

When we got home on the 42 (having just been mooned at 
!), the bus driver drove to the bus stop, then obviously realised that it didn't look like the 42 stop...because it was the 26 stop, and then he turned to stare at us, as though we were somehow responsible for his missing bus stop. 
We just shrugged and said "Oh...yeah...it's...er...gone. One of you lot ran into it this morning." He continued to stare at the space where his bus stop should have been, and at us, bewildered. Can't blame him - bare bottoms and then a missing bus stop. Eventful ride.

I am delighted to report that I was to talking to one of the bus shelter crash victims today and she was feeling fine. Her stitches are now taken out and apart from still having numerous small cuts giving her pain on her knee she is well on the mend.
As an aside, I was pleased to hear that the Evening News actually published her letter thanking the staff at the ERI for their wonderful treatment. Perhaps if they had cut her leg off by mistake it would have made the front page.
