Take aways...

In Portobello, whats your favourite place for a take-away?

Chinese has to be the Seaview, unfortunately we lack a decent chippy so I go up to Giovannis on North Broadway. 8)

Best Chinese (although not in Porty!) is the May Flower at Piershill, and best chippy has to be Giovannies (not too far from Porty!). We still go to the Indian at the top of Kings Rd.

Have to disagree about Prince Balti. Went once and had to eat a tin of tomatoes with a few dried spices in it. One of the worst Indian meals I've had.

Although not related (I know it's not takeaway) but I'm amazed at the great press Dalriada gets on this messageboard. I've been twice. First time was average and the second was diabolical. Including having to sit there and eat overpriced average food whilst the chef blabbed on to the table next to us about how food critics don't know the proverbial. I do really like the bar in Dalriada though.

Chineses on Bath Street is probably the best I've had in Edinburgh.

Where Bedford Terrace meets the Prom [just before Morton Street going east along said Prom]. Used to be The Temple Lodge, then the Bedford.

I agree. I have had mixed experiences with the food in the Dalriada but thought I would give it another chance seeing it's Friday and I do enjoy going there for a drink.

Unfortunately I have to report that it was the most unspectacular lunch imaginable. The Caesar Salads were already off the menu at 12.30 on a Friday lunchtime! - the service was slow and the food overpriced, poorly presented and lacking in taste. All three of us were very disappointed in our dishes.

It's only drinks for me from now on in here. 8)

ditto re Dalriada. The chef always has a face like fizz when he is out in the bar area the tapas are nice, but far too overpriced and not enough portion wise. Good pub though.

I notice that Portobello's premier sandwich shop is looking for a new member of staff. The ad in the window says 'must have a cheery nature' or words to that effect. The current sales technique mustn't be working.

'Mr India' is by far the best place for Indian food... not just Porty but the best I've ever eaten. The downside is it takes a while for them to deliver.

I tried 'Mr India' after another recommendation on here (think it might have been Porty ) but was disappointed. The food was very hot (I like spicy, but don't like my curry to taste like a vindaloo) and the pan fried king prawns were crispy and tasted of burnt butter.
Maybe I was just unlucky. :(

Yes - I think it has just been bad luck Marya. I have had many superb meals out of there and only one when it was dodgy. I think they had an oven out that night and could not cope. I have given up getting them delivered tho' as it takes ages. 8)

I once took Mr India's Chicken Shaslik to a friends who described it as "orgasmic".

However, i have not tried Spices on the High Street is it good? I see the new indian in Brighton Place has its signage up. Can't be long now.

Friends of ours swear by Spices, but the only time we've had food from there it was pretty horrible. Maybe we were just unlucky too.

I've been to spices once but it wasn't up to much.

Anyone know when the Thai place is opening?

I didn't realise the new place is Thai. I'm not overly fond of the Thai taste.

I'm sure it is... could be wrong though. It's the place opposite Greggs.
I love Thai food... that coconut/lime combination... mmmmm.

Chris, you are probably correct. I have been following observations on the place on POL and can only remember it being referred to as an Indian.

Welcome, by the way. :D

What used to be "Mark's Sandwich Bar" says it will be a Thai, while the one on Brighton Place will be an Indian Restaurant....I think :?

Yep some leaflets went up indicating that Mark's would become a Thai place aaaaaages ago and there's been no activity since. I wish someone would at least put a gate across the doorway to stop people spewing up in it. It's looking really run down, I do hope it gets spruced up soon.
