Wow, that was back in the Seventies. If I recall back then merit and popularity were not enough to ensure Prefectship. Didn't you also have to be intelligent, witty and pretty darn handsome to be a Prefect?Pal of Porty wrote:I was a prefect at school!

She had one problem with violence from a gang of youths from Niddrie who had been kicked out of the First & Last pub for bad behaviour and came down to the Tides Inn to cause trouble. She contacted the police and closed the bar once the police had moved the gang on.
I think it is a bit unfair to bring the First and last pub into the "Tides Inn" problems. I also live in Kings Road - towards the bottom - and I have been a regular in the First and Last for a number of years. Since the present owners took over, the place has never looked back. They provide a good community atmosphere and provide entertainment/participation events most nights of the week. They have a great quiz night on a Thursday, which is always well attended and includes small drinks prizes on a monthly basis for most who take part.
Like all other PUBLIC houses the place can expect anyone through their doors. However, if troublemakers darken the door, they are quickly removed by either the owners or the locals. If those who are ejected move onto another pub, then the proprietors of the First and Last can hardly be held responsible.
They also have a karaoke on a Friday and a cabaret on a Saturday, but the music is never allowed to be overbearing. It seems they have a good relationship with upstairs neighbours and other local businesses.
I hope Maureen gets her problems sorted out at the Tides Inn - Maybe they should take a leaf from the First and Last

I don't think there was any inference that the 'First and Last' was at fault in any way and I understand that there is now a system in place between the pubs (and several other Portobello bars) to alert each other of potential trouble-makers.
Glad to hear you have a friendly local pub that enjoys good relations with its neighbours.

I really didn't know that. What year did you leave '78? (I have never quite understood why we do that, instead of 1978 we write '78. It only saves one character)Epykat wrote:Duddingston HousePorty wrote:Vice captain, i didn't know that, what of?Epykat wrote:Not only was I a prefect - I was also a Vice Captain(and I still have the badge to prove it - you can borrow it if you like Bob)

Bob, well said. The very fact that Maureen knew that the David Frost haters had been kicked out of the First and Last suggests that the system you mention above was already in place. The F&L did everything right by the sound of things.Bob Jefferson wrote:I don't think there was any inference that the 'First and Last' was at fault in any way and I understand that there is now a system in place between the pubs (and several other Portobello bars) to alert each other of potential trouble-makers..
PoP and I were in Utopia Beachlife on friday and it looks much the same to me.
However, there were a few other known locals in there, including Gregor, the long haired gentle guy who works in Kitcheners. He was there until about 1 when the bar closed and did not seem drunk. Shortly afterwards he was set upon and ended up with a broken leg, he is still in hospitall
At this point details are sketchy. It is not clear whether UB or anyone who had been drinking there was involved.

A quick up date for the prefects, I thought you would be interested to know what changes the residents of King’s Road have experienced, since your meeting with the licensee of the Tides Inn. Bog all! In fact if any thing, it’s possible got worse. Now we have karaoke on a Sunday as well as Fridays and Saturdays.
Still you’ll probable now this, having your finger on the pulse of all that happens in Porty.
To think you were uncomfortable on perhaps scared to let me attend that meeting, when at the end of the day you have achieved to date very little, if any thing. What difference would my attendance have made to achieving Bog all?

Bob, I have never intimated that I wish to meet with the Licensee, I think you’ll find this was at the prefect’s suggestion, made at the meeting I was not allowed to attend. (When the licensee asked why I was not at the meeting, which I know she did. What was the replay?) I have never hidden my identity and I no for a fact the licensee knows who I am and where I live. Yet no contact has ever been made. Perhaps if I met then this noise disturbance problem would be sorted at a meeting. Please! I have lost count how many times this issue has been raised by a selection of people. I realised very early on that I was being P****D on and told it was raining. I have been very vey clear, that I will meet the licensing in the city chambers when I object to the licence in October.

Meaning its all my own fault. Nice! Blame the victim. It makes no odds whether I meet the licensee or not. Its not my behaviour that's anti social and I have no obligation to meet with anyone in relation to this issue. The only meeting I intimated that I wished to attend was the very meeting that suggested I met the Licensee.
Got the message. As thing's have not worked out as promised at the prefects meeting, then it can't be anything to do with the licensees attitude. It must be because I've not met with the licensee.
I right!

All that has been achieved since the Prefects' meeting from your point of view is to get you an extra nights Karoke. Maureen, you must be at your wits end. Whether you have personally spoken to to the appropriate Punch personnel or not - I understand that part of the prefects' meeting was to discuss the impact of the 'Tides Inn' on its immediate neighbours. What part did they not understand?

Don't worry Maureen, you have a large support.
I would like to ask one of the Prefects what, if any, drinks and nibbles were served during the Punch meeting? Did you stick with crisps and nuts or does McCrow do canapes?
Next meeting time you should have one of those small home bars that were popular in the seventies - and you should be forced to have your meeting while Brian's stereo is playing his James Last records at full volume.
That way, when one of the Punch toffs says "can't we turn down this music?" you can laugh as Brian jokes "that's what Maureen would say!!"
And then youse can have another round of Pimms.

I can understand where you're coming from Maureen. It must be so totally frustrating for you and your neighbours for this to be happening. I agree - the licensee knows the concerns of the neighbours but is obviously doing absolutely all about it so why should you have to chase her up. I hope you and your neighbours do put your point across strongly when you have the chance and that somebody listens to you.
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

I get the impression that you'll have to something more Simon and Garfunkel to get Maureen on your side...
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

Before you start slagging off the bar staff, I know for a fact that the barmaid that was working her little *backside* off that night was supposed to finish a lot earlier than she did. I’m a regular at Utopia and would go as far as to call her a friend. If I remember correctly even though she had to work later than she should have, she still ran rings around her workmate and as far as I am aware, although shattered she still managed to be extremely more polite than him too. So not only is the young girl pregnant and had to work extra time, whilst walking home with her partner and good friend Gregor, she witnessed the incident which resulted in his’s ankle being broken. Very shaken, tired and worried for Gregor, she then spent the rest of the night alone whilst her partner assisted their good friend at the A&E. I am sorry to share this with you all but knowing what that poor girl did at work and had to witness that night- especially in mid pregnancy- I couldn’t possibly let that remark go.Epykat wrote:I wasn't that keen on the service either. Nice screen name, disgusting.
Were you planning on joining the forum and taking part in reasoned conversation with that screen name? Or did you just want to say your piece and leave without letting Epykat have a reply?
In all probability, Epykat got it wrong - but whilst she wasn't slagging anyone off (saying somebody rang up a till isn't slagging - slagging is a personal insult, Epykat simply stated events which happened) you have made yourself look very foolish with your choice of username and the way you chose to get your point across.
So what would happen if Epykat posted an apology - you would accept the apology in a friendly post, from a user calling themselves "DISGUSTED" ?
I don't think you've thought this one through - or if you have, this forum isn't for single posts - those are called announcements.

Sometimes I feel that when he has noone to argue with, Dadaist sets himself up as a new member, posts a message and then replies with his usual entertaining, outspoken prose.
Does anyone else suspect this to be the case in this instance?

Dada, I think you're out of line.
DisgustedPR has a right to call him/herself what he/she likes as long as it doesn't contravene posting guidelines, and I'm concerned that you feel it appropriate to level criticism at a new member for their choice of username.
With regard to the other point, I also feel that DPR has a right to stand up for his/her friend and to give another side to what was going on that night. Epykat had a right to criticise the service; surely other people have a right to defend it? His/her explanation doesn't alter Epykat's experience, and I can't see anywhere where it tries to; it just shows the other side. I thouight that was something you were quite keen on, showing that there are usually two or more sides to a story. I'm disappointed by your response - not your usual standard, I'm afraid.
