Portobello sailing

Had a lovely couple of hours Friday evening sitting on the beach, reading and snoozing. There was someone at the Joppa end with a wee dinghy - a topper I believe. Anyone here? I've done a tiny bit of sailing and would love to go out for an hour or two sometime. Does anyone own or have access to a topper or something similar in Portobello that I could borrow / hire. Or just go for a sail with one evening / weekend. Port Edgar is such a long way away!

I think it's all private yachts rather than dinghies at Musselburgh - but I'll check sometime. Thanks for getting back.

Well actually I have a mirror dinghy sitting rotting in a garage in Rosefield. It needs a slight repair but could be made seaworthy again very easily. None of my friends like sailing so I'm not sure quite what to do with it. Any suggestions?

I'm really interested! Anyone else want to start a Porty Forum Sailing Club? Unfortunately I don't have anywhere to store it. I already have two bikes at the bottom of the stairs!

And is the sea deep enough to launch a Mirror from Portobello beach?

Gedge - you might be able to count me in at some point in the future.

never sailed anything as small as a dinghy before (haven't sailed a lot of anything, really) , but I am fairly certain that if you keep going far enough out to sea it WILL get deep enough!

Mirrors are a bit on the small side as I remember - perhaps Hellscat could tell us how many big and little peeps they sit?

and wouldn't you think about keeping it at Musselburgh?

The mirror is probably ideal , if sailing , for two adults maybe 1 child at a push. It also has oars and an outboard. If using the outboard it could take 2 adults and two children. I think it might be OK to launch from Porty as it's fairly flat bottomed but probably better from Musselburgh.
Doesn't it cost to store at Musselburgh?

I do still have the mirror with one small issue - it needs repaired before it will be seaworthy. The repair is not too difficult and can be done by any competent DIYer. I would have done it myself but have had no motivation or time to do it so far. Any volunteers?
