History Help

Wonder if anyone can help. I'm trying to locate Jewel Cottages which I believe were/are located in the Portobello area. Also could anyone help with any information/history regarding the local mining industry? Many thanks.

Jewel Cottages appear to have stood on the ground now occupied by the Miner's social club in Niddrie Road. Now owned by the Trustees of Jewel Miners Welfare Society and Social Club.

The Miners Cottages - commonly known as the Jewel Cottages - ran from the Jewel Miners Institute (still there) up to where the rail bridge is - just before Niddrie Mill. The large expanse of wasteland used by kids for their football is where the cottages were situated.

The cottages were similar to the old red brick cottages (no idea if any left) down the main street in Newcraighall RHS travelling from Niddrie.

Newcraighall Miners Welfare Society - would, I expect, be able to furnish you with the mining history of the area and old photographs.

No, there are none of the original miner's cottages left in Newcraighall either...both these and the Jewel cottages were still standing in the 1960s though, before demolition.

As for mining history, why not visit the Mining Museum at Newtongrange?

The Niddrie Cottages are still there on Newcraighall Road (West of Fort Kinnaird):
Edinburgh, Newcraighall Road, Niddrie Cottages

Built prior to World War One (probably c.1912), these houses comprise a row of five one-and-a-half-storeyed blocks, four of which are semi-detached cottages. They are built from yellow (fire-clay rich) brick, and associated with the local collieries of the Niddrie and Benhar Coal Company (Niddrie and Newcraighall Pits, the latter operating from 1898 to 1968). The fifth (east-most) block is longer than the others, comprising four dwellings in a small terrace. All the cottages have gabled slate roofs and dormers.

And further down Newcraighall Rd towards Musselburgh there are the Whitehill Street Cottages:
Possibly originally 18th century, remodelled later. Single
storey row of 2-window and centre door cottages, rubble
patched in brick, harled with long and short surrounds to
openings, pantiled roof sloping with ground, brick outshots
at back
And the Quarry Cottages on Niddrie Mains Rd?
