Neighbourhood Watch Schemes

Post by Guest » 25 Feb 2004, 21:54

Worried about crime in your area? Do you have an active neighbourhood watch scheme in your area? Do you have one that needs to be resurrected? Are you thinking about starting a new one? Don't wait for someone else to do it - do it yourself!

The East Edinburgh Crime Prevention Panel has a database of these schemes. Unfortunately, it's way out of date. Through the forum I hope that we can assist them in re-establishing contact. I'm in the process of helping to start a new scheme in the Rosefield area and I think it would be very useful for us to be able to link up with similar groups in the area.

Please get in touch with me directly or via the forum. I'm also willing to help other people get their schemes off the ground. It's not difficult and it's not expensive. The signs themselves ARE a deterrent to criminals, it helps to foster community spirit AND membership might give you a discount on your insurance.

My other half was supposed to be setting one up for our area, as some people might remember, but never quite got around to it, although I understand the police did deliver the pack. I think it may be time to give my partner a reminder!

Bellybabe, here's a date for your partner's diary, and for anyone else who may be interested.

A meeting is being held upstairs in Portobello Library on Monday 10 May with a view to forming an association of active NW schemes in the Portobello area. If you are involved in such a scheme or would like to get one off the ground in your area please come along.

We plan to share ideas and information and hopefully elect someone to represent the group on Portobello Community Council. The meeting starts at 6:30pm. Email me if you need more info. Hope to see you there.

Quick report on this evening's meeting. Representatives from a number of local NW schemes were in attendance, as was Maureen Child. The idea of forming an association was considered a good one and Brian McCrow was duly appointed Chair.

Those in attendance were invited to the forthcoming Community Council AGM and it was agreed that the association would appoint representatives on a rota basis to atttend future CC meetings.

The next meeting will be held on Tues 10 August. In the meantime, we would like to hear from anyone else involved in a local NW scheme, or indeed anyone who would like help in setting one up.

Glad it went well. I hear "Mrs" Bellybabe was duly recognised as my "alter ego"!
I also hear that the problems we have faced here are not nearly as bad as some others', which saddens me a lot. Hopefully through community involvement through things like NW and this forum will help to combat it and make life more pleasant for everyone. Unfortunately, having accompanied someone else home from the meeting, Mrs BB ended up having to hang around and wait for the police because she witnessed some kids throwing things at LRT buses down at Seafield and succeeding in breaking windows... A prime example of the need for NW...
