Portobello Power Station

Also from Nick's footage, shots of the Power Station prior to its demolition. As with the previous clip, to view you need a broadband connection and Windows Media.

Does anyone have memories of the demolition? I imagine it must have drawn quite a crowd.

Wasn't there quite a bit of damage to the properties in Kings Road at the time of demolishing the PS? Residents in BR were advised to leave their windows open for obvious reasons, however there is anecdotal evidence that the properties appeared to lift off their foundations and settle back down again!

The thing I remember most about it was the first dusk after it was down there were hundreds and hundreds of birds just flying about not knowing where to roost. It was really weird.
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

don't think it was quite as long ago Lizzie as I remember the power station

I always think of the houses that are there now as being "new" houses but they must be almost 20years old
I'm not afraid of storms, for I'm learning how to sail my ship

Don't think it was as long ago as 28. I remember I used to think that the Power Station heated the water in the OAP, however it was so blood y cold that couldn't possibly be true.

The book 'Edinburgh from the Air' by Malcolm Cant says that the power station was demolished 'from 1978'.

Im afraid it was....the Powerstations demolition was the final nail in the coffin for the OAP as they had no way to heat the water.... a symbiotic business, great idea......unless one gets demolished!!!.

Ideas did come up to save the OAP such as an opening and closing roof to be built over the pool to keep it warm!!
