Lee Crescent Royal Wedding Street Party

Post by Bob Jefferson » 29 Dec 2004, 23:43

Some time ago Nick Child mentioned to me that he had old cine-film footage of a street party held in Lee Crescent to celebrate the Royal Wedding in 1981. At some point in the past he had converted it to video and I have now got round to digitising and editing the footage.

To view the film you need a broadband connection and Windows Media Player installed. As it's a large file I probably won't be able to leave it up indefinitely.

What were you doing the day Charles and Diana married? Here's my diary entry for that day:
Gorgeous weather. Slept in and missed the royal wedding. Went to see Esther. Took some photos of her in her bikini top and shorts. Made some fruit cocktail with cider, brandy and peaches. Sunbathed in the garden. To know her is to love her.
More unrequited lust I'm afraid!

On that day we had an extra day of leave. My then husband [ecm knows him!!] and I went for a walk to the Falls of Glomach to get away from it all as we were staying with my wee bro who was the gamekeeper for the Inverinate Estate at the time.

I told my mum I was ill and got to wag it off school. P4, I think I was in. So I watched it because there was nothing else to do.

Eh, don't say it like that, Pops!!! People will think all sorts!

I can't remember what I did on that day but avoided it all as well. I'm amazed that people could have cared enough to have a street party.

Mind you, not as amazed as I was at the mass hysteria that followed Di's death.

I seem to remember it was a glorious July day...nice enough to sunbathe and have a BarB..so that in itself made it memorable.

Too young to remember :)

Got tons of webspace and bandwidth to play with so I've mirrored the file here -

Mr E was living it up in France with his pal and was moping, heartbroken style in my flat with our two other flatmates. Got photos of us sunbathing in the garden with the portable TV outside to watch the wedding.
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

I was in LA, having graduated in 1981, four of us went and bummed around for 6 months. We were living in Santa Monica, which has a big British population and the C and D wedding was a major deal for the yanks and the brits.

We were working at a diner called alphys and the staff decided to have a party in our honour. I think the wedding was at 3pm which made it around 6am in LA, it was a long and fun night. We stayed up the whole day on the beach. I saw a photo of us quite recently, made me feel very sad indeed.

Ive never been back to LA since (touched down in LAX) and doubt I ever will.

What were you doing the day Charles and Diana married?
I was working out in Oxgangs (not quite as exotic as LA, I know), packing cigarette packets with change, for pub and bingo hall vending machines. I got paid treble rates :D
Before I left for work that morning I had (accidentally!) dropped our portable tele so my flatmates couldn't watch Chaz and Di either

I was on holiday in Portugal and was extremely pleased not to see one single minute of the ceremony. It was not all roses however - I was with my future ex wife! :?

Glad to say I don't have a clue where I was - did not take much interest in this - sorry, that was overly generous - I took no interest in this at all. :tongue7: Not much one for the so called royal family.

so who is/was Esther?

I have a very hazy memory of playing in the garden that day and being left to my own devices as everyone else was watching the wedding

Remember getting the day off work to watch the ceremony, which I did.
I liked Princess Diana, but have no time for the rest of them.

At the time of Andrew and Fergie's Wedding I had just arrived on Vancouver Island to visit family, the place was covered in bunting, my well meaning cousin asked me if I would like to be woken up to watch the Royal Wedding on TV! hello
