Baby's First Christmas by Connie Francis -
it was number one over the festive period back in 1961, my first Xmas. My auntie bought it for me so I guess my vinyl collection started when I was 4 months old.

well, in daylight hours I'm with you Porty.

But later on, when I AM at home (for the night, if not yet for Christmas) with a sleeping child in one hand and a glass of vino in the other, its 'silent night'

unfortunately, the moment is much shorter than the song. Which reminds me of...

PS I don't want to be mean at festive season but PLEASE keep your Beatles ***** . its not wanted at my party (or wake),(or indeed at any waking moment)

Or the flip side "Listen The Snow Is Falling", which is even better.
I have nothing to say and I'm going to say it.

Why do people start off with, I don't want to be mean (offensive, intrusive etc), then go on to be exactly that? Always puzzles me this one! :)

Its because we are very polite.

We know we ARE going to be offensive but we don't want any aggro back.

Now be truthful - was the first thought to come your mind "Oh that Pal of Porty is a very polite chap?"

You can't just choose one Porty. It depends totally on mood and circumstance.
For example, I defy anyone not to listen to their 4/5 year old child and his/her classmates sing "Away in a Manger" and not have a lump in their throat.
I'm a fan of "Silver Bells" by Jim Reeves because it reminds me of my Mum as she played it every year at this time (likewise "White Christmas").
If I'm at a work's night out then Wizzard's "I wish it could be Christmas every day" and Slade's "Merry Xmas Everybody" is a must.....corny I know
And for that 'glass of wine' time then I'm with you on "Stop the cavalry" but will add in Harry Belfonte singing "Mary's Boy Child" , any version of "Little Donkey" and can I also have Simon and Garfunkel's version of "Silent Night"? :D :D

That makes only 9 favourites then..... :?

Marya - Only nine! Thank goodness Porty never asked for our Top 10. By my reckoning that would have been 90 songs and too long a post.

No! No! No! - I hate it!!

"Have yourself a merry little Christmas" will reduce me to tears.
Silent Night is gorgeous.
I grew up listening at this time ofyear to my mum's Mario Lanza Christmas record - that man didn't understand the meaning of restraint but I love it!- "Joy to the world" is a masterpiece. :)

I was once asked to be part of a sextet requested to sing carols at a stately home in yorkshire whilst the guests ate turkey and mince pies. We sang all sorts of carols in four part harmony, and some in five or six parts, and at the end were asked to take requests. The first request was Little Donkey. Not one of us could remember the words and it was an utter shambles, unlike our hall decking and our holly and our ivy, and i've had an ever softer soft spot for it ever since. In spite of it we did get invited back a few more times.

I happened to mention to eldest offspring that it's my favourite, and so boy, did he give it some welly at his concert on Monday...hands in pockets, shirt untucked, as loud as possible and completely out of tune. And at the end gave me such a smug, I-did-it-all-for-you look... Ahhh...
All I really need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt!

A pretty popular one going by the polls I've seen but, nevertheless, mine is..

'Fairytale of New York' by the Pogues and Kirsty McColl

So much more a real song than all the usual Christmas crap :D

Nothing to be embarrassed about, Poppy!

Between all us Pingu fans we could sort out world peace, and although you may get a bit sick of the trumpetting, there would never be a cross word spoken!
